Shewhart’s PDCA Model
The Shewhart or Demin PDCA model is a four-stage process applied to improve performance and provide a solution to arising problems. The four steps represented in the model include Plan, Do, Check, and Act. The significance of implementing the processes in nursing is because they assist clear doubts on the desired results, improvements, and clarity of a project.
The first stage in the model is planning, which focuses on identifying a problem, developing a theory, formulating merit measures, and setting the plan into motion (Huber, 2014). The next step, Do- involves the implementation of the components of the identified program. The third step Check or study focuses on the success or failure of the already in motion plan to establish its validity and identify areas requiring improvement. The final step, Act combines all the information generated during the stages of the model to determine whether the process was successful or not, (Audette et al. 2017, n.p.).
