Chapter 7
The Monroe Doctrine was a declaration by the United States President James Monroe in 1823, stating that the entire hemisphere of America, both from the South to the North was sealed off to new colonization by European nations (Locke and Ben n.p.). Thus, the doctrine supported wars of independence that were occurring in various countries of Latin America. The doctrine changed the American foreign policy in that President Monroe focused on having a strong military. The aggressive foreign policy was adopted following the doctrine as America focused on safeguarding its interests within and outside its borders.
Chapter 8
Companionships marriages refer to a shift in the roles of couples that occurred during the mid 19th century. It signified an end to the institutional marriages which was mainly labor arrangements to maximize the chances of survival of a couple. Under the institutional marriages, men occupied a superior position and women were often regarded as inferiors whose role increasingly subdued (Locke and Ben n.p). However, under the companionship marriages, the role of women was acknowledged, and they became important partners rather than the followers of their husbands. The companionship marriages improved the status of women since they began to participate in jobs that were reserved for men. They were also recognized under the role in matters of divorce. This enabled them to take charge of their lives and economic well-being improved.

Chapter 9
Andrew Jackson was a crucial figure in the rise of both the Democratic and the Whig party. Regarding the Democratic Party, Jackson led his supporters in breaking away from the sole political party, Democratic-Republicans that featured in 1824 elections (Locke and Ben n.p.). This led into the formation of the Democratic Party that opposed the centralization of power by President John Quincy Adams. Upon winning the election of 1828 under the Democratic Party, the opponents of Jackson formed the Whig party since they believed that he was making his office too powerful. In this regard, Jackson also played a role in the rise of the Whig party since it is due to his policies that caused dissatisfaction and the breakaway members formed the new party.
