Why Abortion Should be Legal
Abortion refers to the cessation of a given pregnancy. A legal abortion may be carried out up to the sixteenth week of pregnancy. After sixteen weeks are over, many surgeons or physicians do not accept performing the act unless the pregnancy poses some adverse risks, which may result in specific complications to the mother. However, even when these conditions appear, it is dangerous to act on abortion. Nowadays abortion has been viewed as a usual norm in the lives of people. It has been recommended as a convenient and most comfortable way that helps in doing away with either accidental or unwanted pregnancies. However, the act of abortion must never be misconceived for its suitability since it has a measure of disadvantages and advantages as well. This paper discusses both the advantages and disadvantages of abortion and uses the evaluation between both to argue about why abortion should be legal.
Pros of Abortion
Numerous advantages are associated with abortion, especially to the lives of women. One significant advantage is that abortion is viewed as being right for women who choose what needs to be performed with their body and life. When people are not allowed to take control of their bodies and themselves, then there is no relevance to having rights and freedom. The other factor that makes abortion to be considered legal is the issue of cases involving unwanted pregnancies.

Unwanted pregnancies are a way of distracting females from focusing on some critical aspects of their lives such as careers and school. Although some institutions offer individual classes meant for pregnant women in the learning institutions, this does not happen in all places. In many cases, unwanted pregnancies when one is in school result to instances of school dropout and this alters one’s prospects in life. Additionally, most of the unintended pregnancies involve cases where women have to bear and raise children on their own without the presence of the child’s father. This makes abortion the only best alternative to keep the woman and her family from taking over the burden associated with taking up the responsibilities that come with children.
The procurement of abortion prevents women from having children that have been conceived via rape. Nowadays, rape has been attributed as among the most heinous behaviors against the human being. According to Dinethri et al., (2016), children conceived through rape will present immense challenges to women as they will remind them of the ordeals, making it hard to move from the past. Abortion also presents women with the power of ending a pregnancy which would have resulted in children having various abnormalities that would guarantee a life characterized by suffering and pain.
Cons of the Abortion
One disadvantage of abortion is that the act might be treated as brutal since it fails to give the baby inside the mother’s womb the right of living just like everyone else. In this effect, abortion has been highly forbidden by several religions since they perceive it as an act of killing the unborn baby. The other disadvantage is that abortion has the potential to result in women experiencing psychological impairments, for instance, depression as well as guilt.
To conclude, besides the disapproval that the act of abortion receives from the society, it does play a vital role in the community. While some view abortion as an immoral act which may result to psychological effects on women, abortion remains as the only legitimate alternative for women due to medical reasons, protecting the rights and freedom of women, preventing unwanted pregnancy, and avoiding bearing children with abnormalities. Hence, abortion should be legalized.
