Upon finishing this book, it the principle is understood that Werther became another casualty in the ancient game of the love triangle. Werther did not actually think she would stay engaged to Albert. His desires and love of Charlotte were not enough to sway her decision. Love as humans know it today, as not changed much since those times (Wellbery et al., 388). Love can hurt or heal; in this case, the pain was for everyone. These next paragraphs will embrace the authors writing and detail the details of this memorable love triangle epitomized in a one sided view from Werther. It is a heart-rending story.
Werther poured out his heart in his declarations of love for Charlotte in his writings. They were cousins, and this fact did not dissuade Werther from this fatal attraction style, one-sided love triangle. Even his aunt attempted to talk him out of it. “Take care,” added the aunt, “that you do not lose your heart.” “Why?” said I. “Because she is already engaged to a very worthy man,” she replied, “who is gone to settle his affairs upon the death of his father, and will succeed to a very considerable inheritance,” (10). Werther was in love. Charlotte did care for him, but she was engaged to Albert. Werther spends a few painful months nurturing a close friendship with them both. His pain eventually becomes so great that he does leave town. Werther just cannot stay away from Charlotte. He is childlike, almost consumed with desire for something he will never get to experience.

The pain Werther experiences continue to progress until he can stand it no longer. “Every day I succumb to the temptation and make a sacred promise to myself: Tomorrow you’ll stay away for once. But when morning comes I again find an irresistible reason, and before I know it I’m with her.” (46) This is too much for Werther to handle, and he makes the critical choice of leaving the land of the living. The love triangle repeatedly happens in the world. Nobody wins when involved in one. In this case, a no one wins. Charlotte stays with her finance. Werther is devastated, and Albert and Charlotte are devastated. Love triangles can be fatal, and this case it was to Werther. When Werther finally gets the courage to commit this horrible offense, all in his circle feel his pain and regret not preventing it from happening (Goethe and Pike, 377).
Conclusion
Love is many things to many people. No one gets to pick the one they fall in love with it just happens, and humans get to live with the good and bad while hoping to make it work in their favor. Love triangles cast doubt, and hurt to those who get involved in one. No one really wins while involved. It is amazing how Werther wrote about his love for Charlotte and did not share most of it with her. It might have made a difference in their lives. They lived in a world where this situation was quite common. There are lessons one can learn from the sad story. Do no should get involved in love triangles. Some humans never learn this lesson, because it still happens even today. No one wins in a love triangle.
