Summary of Article
This article details President Trump’s plan to prevent the recent wave of school shootings. According to the president, the best way to deter these shootings is to provide highly-trained teachers with firearms and increase their salaries to motivate them (Davis 1). This approach can transform schools into harden targets and discourage gun-firing criminals from attacking them. President Trump has made different proposals since the last school shooting in the US, including a reduction in gun limits. This plan to arm teachers appears to be the best option for the president, but one which he insists should focus on tutors that have training and experience in handling guns. Nevertheless, Mr. Trump’s suggestion raises serious questions as it is not based on facts and fails to consider that during the latest shooting, a deputy sheriff did not attempt to diffuse the situation (Davis 1). President Trump has been a strong supporter of gun rights since he began his campaign for president and tenure as a president. Case in point, after last month’s school shooting, Mr. Trump stated that the enactment of new gun laws is not the solution, but rather a hardening of schools (Davis 1). During his address, the president also proposed a change in age limit to 18, but one which the N.R.A and other key figures, like the Chicago mayor have opposed (Davis 1). Teachers have also opposed the president’s suggestion as they are only interested in teaching (Davis 1).

All in all, Mr. Trump maintains that his administration and other relevant bodies (the N.R.A, the US Congress and the Justice Department) need to respond accordingly.
This news report interests me because it focuses on a critical issue, gun ownership, and its implications. I chose this article as I am interested in understanding the two opposing sides of gun ownership. On the one hand, individuals like President Trump and a majority of Republicans support gun ownership and less gun control laws as they believe that guns can preserve their freedoms. On the other hand, prominent figures, mainly the Democrats call for a reduction in gun ownership and more gun control legislation. These individuals maintain that guns threaten not only their liberty but also their lives. This piece is therefore interesting as it illuminates on the conflicting interests of gun ownership and how they divide the society.
In my opinion, this news piece offers a clear and detailed account of President’s Trump recent plan to prevent school shootings. It gives an account of what the president has done so far to address this thorny issue, the strengths and weaknesses of his plan, as well as the challenges and opposition he has encountered from different parties. I believe that upon reading it, one can acquire sufficient knowledge to shape their position on gun ownership and its consequences.
Finally, the main event in this article (the Parkland school shooting) poses various implications on the US and the world at large. Such a high-profile incident causes significant disruptions in schools, and other vital institutions like police departments since learning may stop, while the police spend a lot of time solving similar crimes. This event also impacts the social and mental well-being of an entire society as it affects children, their parents, guardians, and teachers, as well as onlookers. Such an event, therefore, transcends beyond a school environment to the whole world.
