Should We Sweat for Sweatshop?

Abstract
Over the years, there have been debates over whether or not sweatshops are appropriate. The opponents argue that they are unethical and promotes the exploitation of the poor. They cite that while the workers in sweatshops are given lots of works and maybe work over time, they get paid cents per hour which undoubtedly are not commensurate with the amount of work they do. Also, they state that sweatshop provide unhealthy environments for the workers and thus they are havens for deadly diseases. The proponents, on the other hand, state that sweatshops are necessary as they provide alternative employment opportunities for those who are jobless or doing unethical or dangerous jobs. Many individuals are uneducated or poor desire to survive but do not have sources of income. Therefore, sweatshops are necessary to fill in the existing gap in society to ensure that the poor and the jobless get to live a better life than they would live without any source of income.

Should We Sweat for Sweatshops?
Many manufacturing companies especially those in the textile industry have in the past deployed sweatshops. Notably, these companies have opened the sweatshops in the countries or regions where individuals are most vulnerable (Arnold, 2018). Their argument for deploying sweatshops in these areas is based on the fact that even the uneducated or the educated but unemployed individuals need to find some way of surviving. The critics of sweatshops have however argued against them citing that they are unethical.

In this regard, what are the pros and cons of sweatshops?
The pros of sweatshops include among others the following: First, sweatshops provide employment opportunities for those who lack jobs but needs to survive. Secondly, in third world countries, they provide more decent and safer alternatives to crime and prostitution especially when the two options are the only available choices for the jobless or the poor (Barry, 2018). Also, they offer safer alternatives to more dangerous jobs such as military service, truck driving, and building construction. Finally, sweatshops help keep down the prices especially in the clothing industry. Without the sweatshops, the prices of clothes would be higher.
On the other hand, the cons of sweatshops include the following: First, while most sweatshops’ workers tend to work for long hours doing tedious jobs, they only get paid peanuts. Secondly, sweatshops take jobs away from developed countries such as the US when these countries also are in need for more job opportunities. Also, the sweatshops promote worker’s exploitation for corporate profit gain. Moreover, they are havens for deadly diseases due to poor health conditions (Barry, 2018).
From the pros and cons of sweatshops, it is apparent that we should sweat for the sweatshop. Before, criticizing the sweatshops, it is essential for individuals to be fair-minded. Not every person is educated and rich, there many other individuals who are uneducated and poor or educated but jobless who need something to do. The two categories of individuals all need to survive, as such, they need something they can rely on for income.
In other words, sweatshops offer better standards of living for those who are jobless and the poor in society.
