Benefits of Globalization on Labor Mobility and Unemployment
Globalization is the integration and interaction among governments of varying countries, companies, and individuals. The process is motivated by investments and international trade (Stalker 24). Information technology is the basis of the process. Globalization affects different aspects in a variety of ways. It has an effect on the economy, the environment, cultures, political systems, and well- being of humans in different societies in the world. By economic development, it has an effect on unemployment and labor mobility.
Globalization has encouraged nations to develop their on- tradable sector. It is the sector that deals with the production of goods and services that are strictly consumed domestically. In the United States, jobs increased by 27 million job opportunities between the year 1990 and 2008 (Wagner 50). Globalization encourages markets to venture and expand in different nations. International trade has increased substantially resulting in economic growth. Increased labor force boosts trade. It, therefore, increases job opportunities in the tradable sectors of the global economy. Jobs opportunities in the now- tradable sector also increases to remain competitive with the growing tradable sector. Globalization has helped remove barriers between nations which make it easier for job seekers to seek for jobs in the destinations of their preference for their careers (Mills 581).

The process of globalization has led to the development of software and information technology companies to ease marketing. It has therefore increased job opportunities for individuals in the related industries. Interaction of different nations is a chance to diversify in various languages which would increase one’s chances of working in different countries. Globalization has led to developed countries making their investments in the developing countries. It creates job opportunities in the developing countries who supply labor to the new businesses (Goldberg and Nina 72). Globalization has coaxed countries to increase their exports, which can now gain market in the international trade. The increase in productivity requires an increase in labor supply which opens up jobs opportunities. Globalization has also encouraged the growth of new sectors in the market which require skilled labor force.
Labor is a major factor of production. Labor mobility refers to the movement of laborers within an economy and interaction with other economies with ease. Labor mobility is divided into two sections: occupational mobility and geographic mobility. Occupational mobility is an opportunity to change careers while geographic mobility is the relocation of a worker to a different location. Currently, more people work outside their countries of origin than any other time in the past. Statistics showed that approximately 214 million people moved to other countries for employment (Silver 67). Globalization makes it easy for laborers to move to areas they can offer their skills. It is enabled by the ease of crossing borders of nations that trade together. Increased labor mobility helps workers to improve their financial situations. Improved labor movement helps economies adapt to advancing technologies quickly and attain competitive advantages. Innovative industries develop as a result of globalization on labor mobility. Freedom of choice enhances better productivity compared to restrictions. Initial restriction before the process of globalization caused slow growth of the economies. Less control on the mobility of laborers encourage increased productivity, and the right employees are hired to improve the economy. Globalization has also changed trends regarding direction and composition. In the past, laborers only moved to the North from the South. People can now move from North to South and from the South. Globalization has made the world one global village.
