The impact and use of transgenic foods

Introduction

The following work is based on knowing that they are transgenics and the impact that its use has either beneficial or harmful to the human being, the transgenics are achieved from the crossroading of genes of different species, which has developed worldwide debates It is worth emphasizing that in the elaboration of this work several ideas from different authors were taken into account in order to have a broader knowledge about this subject.

With the advance of genetically manipulated foods it has been possible to add characteristics that certain plants lacked, such as herbicide resistance, pests and temperatures at which these plants were not resistant. 

This issue of transgenic products brings a lot of controversy, since there are people who support the use of these modified and/or genetically improved products, however there are also groups of people who do not support the use of these foods.

As for my personal opinion, it is worth mentioning that I am in favor of the use of these genetically improved foods in order to guarantee a reduction of costs and an improvement in production, since consumers increasingly demand products with greater durability and have a good presentation.

They are called transgenic foods to all those that come from genetically modified organisms (OGM) directly or indirectly, to include them in their production process, that is, it is all that organism that contains aggregate a strange gene.

One of the advantages of genetic engineering is that it allows modifying genes without depending on natural reproduction processes.

These foods are formed with genetically improved plant or animal raw materials. It can be done in two ways: inserting a gene of a different species through genetic engineering or transforming the expression of own genes without inserting DNA of a different species.  It is worth mentioning that they are not always entirely ‘transgenic’, since on certain occasions the gene that is added comes from the same genre.

Genetically modified foods are listed as an ally for the world, because thanks to the crops to create resistances to certain adverse situations, they guarantee the availability of a large production of food and better quality for the population in the future. The advantages and/or benefits of transgenics are oriented in food security, care with the environment, climate change challenges and consumer.

An example is that for farmers it is a very necessary tool to protect their plantations, try to reduce production costs and thus increase the profitability of the harvest and thus cover the future food demand. The environment is favored by relying on a more sustainable production method with natural resources (water and soil). 

Thanks to the modification of its properties, genetically modified foods have a greater capacity to adapt to land with little availability of water and nutrients, which guarantees food safety. Thus, they also create resistance to certain pests, thus avoiding the use of pesticides and pollution that they generate in the soils.

In turn, the possibilities of planting transgenic foods in vulnerable places where malnutrition is present by not presenting the optimal conditions for the development of a conventional crop, could decrease hunger remarkably.

This point is one of the most placed to dispute, since some environmental entities attribute hunger to a disastrous distribution of food, since excess food is generated and the same is wasted so much.

Among all its benefits that genetically modified foods can have one of the most striking that is to improve the health of people. The genetic modification of food allows them to attribute to these a large amount of nutrients or vitamins, thus favoring human well -being.

The use of transgenics guarantees prolongation in the life of food and also conservation and its durability. An example to take into account is the case of transgenic tomatoes in which ethylene production has been stopped – a responsible for maturation.

An improvement in organoleptic characters (characteristics that can be perceived by the senses such as smell and taste) of food or in their physical properties. As an example of this they have been obtained: potatoes that absorb in few The increase in aromas in the case of wine. 

Transgenic crops have not only generated greater production, which leads to better economic benefits from farmers, but also to improve health status by reducing poisoning due to misuse of agrochemicals, since the emissions of emissions were significantly reduced Greenhouse gases when using other types of practices such as zero tillage, it is the benefit of these practices is that they help decreasing fossil fuel burning thus retaining more carbon in the soil.

In themselves, transgenic crops are developed in order to meet specific needs through the progress of conventional crops with results that could not be obtained, so effective with conventional reproduction methods. Although there are concerns related to the harvest of transgenic crops, their advantages can benefit not only farmers from developed and developing countries, but also consumers, environment and scientists.

Up to the present, plants resistant to insects-plagues and pathogens have been obtained, better products such as fruits with longer storage durability, foods with better nutritional properties without losing their organoleptic characteristics, such as a higher protein content, amino acids, etc. 

Millions of developing countries that lack resources could obtain great benefits of all technology that can increase agricultural productivity, since costs would be reduced by reducing pesticides use.

In conclusion, training and large farmers should be given training in order to know the benefits of genetically modified foods in order to improve the quality of life both in health and economic.
