Francis McComber’s short stories revolve around human relations in the face of adversity or human challenges. Francis endures living with his domineering wife and is confident the safari will turn the tides in the union. The plot demonstrates the struggles of men especially among empowered women in the society. The story elaborates on the themes of masculinity, courage, marriage, femininity, and violence (Hemingway 17). The story is set in African Savannah in East Africa, within the forest. The short story has only three principal characters, Wilson, Francis, and Margot.
Everyday Use is set in the mundane agricultural areas of Georgia, probably in the mid-19th century. The plot focuses on the story of an old woman, Mama, her daughters, Dee and Maggie, and Dee’s fiancée, Hakim-a-barber. Mama educates Dee to emancipate them from poverty, through education provides a different path for Dee. Maggie is unyielding and hopeless. Mama and Maggie are anticipating Dee’s return, though her arrival brings to the fore more divisions as she wants to change her name and follow a different path of Africanization (Jones and Daniel 11). The story brings to the fore the themes of the role of education in identity creation, family dynamics, the influence of race in the society, traditions, and earlier depiction of homes.
First Day is set in contemporary American society just before the 21st century. The story play outs in Washington, elaborating on the challenges parents face in providing better lives for their children.
