A Connection to ‘the Weight of This World’
David Joy’s film “the Weight of this World” has many defining ideas, but the theme of domestic violence is quite outstanding. Another film with the same theme ‘domestic violence’ is “Crimes of the Heart.” Directed by Beth Henley, Crimes of the Heart is a well-casted film with a rich thematic background.
In the film, three sisters (Babe, Meg, and Lenny) with quite dissimilar personalities and lives are back together at home for the first time in 10 years. Lenny, the eldest of all, did not leave home because she was caring for their old grandfather. Meg, on the other hand, went to sing in Los Angeles as she sought happiness. Her sister, Babe, who is the youngest had, however, been arrested for having killed her husband. Their reunion comes with both joy and resentments. The sisters blame one another for what has been happening both at home and to their family at large (Schneider 0:14). They feel quite uneasy with each other, creating more tension. Their parents separated when they were still young. Their father left their mother, making her commit suicide in the long run. Babe hates her husband even though he is dead. Before his death, Zachery and Babe had a relationship that was fraught with violence.
Collectively, all revelations above paint a clear picture of domestic violence as a central theme in the movie “Crimes of the Heart.” Undoubtedly, this theme is also evident in the film “The Weight of this World.
