Trump’s Election Extra Credit Assignment
In 2008, if anyone would have suggested that Donald Trump could come to be the President of U.S, he would have been laughed off. Even after he announced his intentions to run most people saw it as a joke. Other candidates must have laughed him off or completely ignored him. The elections of 2016 would come go down in history as one of America’s most surprising election outcomes. First of all, a highly unlikely candidate announced his candidature, defeated seasoned politicians in party primaries and went on to win the elections. Donald Trump amazed America and the world by beating Hillary Clinton for the presidency. Not even the polls got it right. Donald Trump’s election victory has various historical significances, and it brings to light certain factors about America that were previously ignored by many.
Donald Trump could have potentially pulled off the greatest upset in American history. Although polls had predicted that Hillary Clinton would easily win, Trump still won. How did he beat the system? How did the pollsters get everything wrong? Roxanne James of ESPN magazine told CNN that Trump’s election might be proof that polls are not the true voices of America. Additionally, she argues that Twitter is the voice of Americans and their voice is angry, white and raging against the political elite (Jones, 1). Furthermore, Trump’s victory will be remembered to be the day when America’s voiceless got a voice. Some Americans felt ignored, forgotten and that they do not matter.

These people felt that Donald was one of them and they came out in droves to support him (Talley, 1). Trump spoke to the angry, working-class Americans and they felt endeared to him. He traversed America and pushed his ‘‘us against others’’ message, and it turns out it is the message millions wanted to hear (Jones, 1).
As the President-elect prepares to take the reins of power, many wonder what his victory says about America. One definite take away from his victory is that Americans are tired of how the country was being run and they wanted to have a new beginning. The working class feels overlooked, and they proved it by electing trump in droves. Both candidates had questions about their characters yet Americans chose change (Setmayer, 1) Furthermore, it proves that economy and foreign policy are most important to Americans and they do not judge the character of the president as long as he has a good policy. Some Republicans wonder if it was worth overlooking integrity, mistreatment of women, common decency, bigotry and demagoguery for few policy victories (Setmayer, 1). Therefore, his victory was one way of Americans saying “the economy is more important than integrity.”
The fact is many people feel differently about trumps victory. Some especially the minority groups feel afraid. Investors and economists are uncertain while the white working class is happy about Trump’s victory. I am optimistic that Donald Trump will make a good president for America. Though acknowledging that no man is perfect, I believe that the true American spirit, the spirit of those who voted for him and those against him is that of love and thoughtfulness. I am also optimistic because I believe that democracy can never go wrong and although one side lost they will be heard and consulted in policy making. I also believe that Donald Trump will soon change the part of his character that some consider racist and soon mold himself to become a president for all Americans.
