Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America is a book written by Linda Tirado. 23 Things they don’t tell you about capitalism is a book by Ha-Joon Chang, published in 2010. In his book, Chang notes that a free labor market does not entail an effective and just reward system for the people. There are vast differences between wages due to limiting immigration policies and economic conditions (Chang, 12). Linda states that there is a disparity in wages with the current minimum wage being $7.25. Additionally, the salaries are not enough for a person to cater for their expenses due to the high cost of living even when working a full-time job. Chang also notes that there is an assumption that the government is bad for the economy which is not necessarily true. A well-designed welfare nation encourages their citizens to take more chances as they are protected. On the other hand, Linda writes about the lack of enough welfare for the citizens (Tirado, 40).
Chang notes that the common assumption that shareholders own companies, hence act towards their interest and the interests of the community. However, most of the big corporations are owned by individuals that who only want to fulfill their will. Similarly, Linda writes that prominent organizations such as McDonald do not care about the livelihood of their employees, as waiters are paid below the minimum wage, making it hard for them to meet their basic needs.
Chang`s book critics the capitalistic theory that overall economic systems work best when people are allowed to make their own decisions.

The truth of is various factors affect the working of the economy that is beyond human control such as underpaid employees, child labor, and lack of motivation to work. Linda identifies that the mindset of a person facilitates poverty. Another assumption by capitalism is that by making the wealthy richer benefits everyone. The rich have failed to accelerate growth on leading to an inequitable distribution of resources. Linda notes that there is an increase in people suffering from poverty due to limited resources. The wealthy have access to all social services such as the best schools, and health care, while the poor have limited access.
