Abortion Argumentative Essay.
Abortion’s controversy is unique in the US because there appears to be no grounds for give-and-take between two opposite sides. The debate mainly revolves around whether a human being is being murdered or not. In the early 70s, abortion became constitutionalized in the US via the Wade vs. Roe court case (Lewis 1). Roe was a pregnant and single woman who was going against the state of Texas, whose law stipulated that it was illegal for her to get an abortion. The judge ruled in favor of Roe, and the result of this landmark case was the legalization of abortion (Lewis 1). Even though there have been several million abortions ever since this ruling, the deliberation on its legalization is actively debated by a lot of Americans as well as other folks from different cultures and countries. These beliefs by these individuals are mainly divided into two: pro-choice believers, who support abortion; and pro-life believers who are against abortion. While pro-life people believe that abortion entails murdering an innocent being, abortion should continue to remain legal because it gives women the opportunity to take back control over their lives, prevents the birth of a child with severe medical issues and prevents long-term negative effects on mother and child because of trauma caused by sexual assault.
The different definitions of abortions are perhaps the main points that bring the controversial debate on the issue of abortion.

The medical definition describes abortion as the pre term untimely withdrawal of conception from the uterus. It is the loss of pregnancy.
On the other hand, religion also plays a crucial role in the moral codes of our society. Hence to define abortion from a religious point of view, we also have to look at how the different religious beliefs influence this abortion topic. In most religious settings, the main point of controversy that has brought the debate on abortion is the issue of when life begins. In Christianity, abortion is regarded as a bad sign that is not accepted by God considering that he is the giver of that life, to begin with. 2 The Catholic believe abortion is wrong so strongly that if a member is found guilty she is excommunicated from the church. Hence in many other denominations, abortion is strongly forbidden. However, there are some Christian denominations that believe in abortion, if it can help save the life of the mother from a medical perspective if it is carefully handled by medical professionals.
Abortion gives women the opportunity to take back control over their lives because it enables them to go back to their careers and jobs. When one puts abortion in perspective, it is clear that the pregnant woman is put through both physical and emotional pain, which can have financial, social and personal effects on the life of the expectant mother. A woman in such a situation might have to put a halt to her career and education to take care of the child. Furthermore, it might inflict substantial financial strain on her that she might not afford. Consequently, when women have abortions, it’s mostly because they are young and do not have the financial muscle to take care of a child, and have other responsibilities such as a career and an education. Accordingly, it would be beneficial for the women to get the abortion and since according to Stuart Derbyshire, Ph.D., it is impossible for a fetus to experience pain during the process, the baby would not be affected in any way (Procon).
Through abortion, women can decide whether they should let their child be born having severe medical issues. According to ProCon (1), 49 percent of children are born unwanted. When this happens, the unwanted child will have a lower probability of enjoying his/her life. A parent might decide that abortion is the best way to go if they find out that their child has a severe disease of deformity. For example, if an expectant mother discovered that their child would me born physically challenged or with a severe mental problem that is not curable, it is preferable for her to carry out an abortion than to let the child suffer for the rest of his/her life.
The people who term themselves ‘pro-life’ argue that when abortion is carried out, the perpetrators are effectively committing murder because they are killing a child. They are of the opinion that regardless of the pregnancy stage, the unborn child is technically a human being. Although these contentions are very valid, the arguments for abortion presented in the preceding paragraphs along with the fact that some of the abortions are because the mothers are victims of sexual assault, support the fact that abortion should remain legal. In America alone, around 208000 people are sexually assaulted (Berlatsky 54). Although a woman’s morality is often questioned when she wants to get an abortion for an unwanted accidental pregnancy, many are more lenient on abortions performed because of incest or rape. This difference is because when a raped woman becomes pregnant, she will suffer a lot of emotional pain in addition to the pain she already suffered. Moreover, the child conceived because of sexual assault might also be affected and have an unhappy childhood.
In a nutshell, abortion should remain legal because it enables the woman to have a second chance in life when a misguided or poor decision was made, the life of the expectant mother is at risk, or when the quality of life of the child is destined to suffer because of debilitation and severe handicaps or disfigurements. Although abortion has these advantages, women should not utilize it as a way of birth control. If it is to remain legal, it should be controlled and regulated to enhance the mother’s life and be advantageous to the society
