Admission to the UCLA International Institute

Growing up, I interacted with many people from less privileged backgrounds. These interactions magnified my sympathy and empathy for the needy in the society and strengthened my desire to do something to decrease the poverty levels in my community and the world as a whole. I particularly remember an incident where a man from my town had an accident at his workplace and became blind because his poor wages and lack of health benefits could not enable him to get the surgery required to save his eyesight. This statement talk about my interest in International Development Studies (IDS), and why I believe UCLA International Institute is the best place for me to major in this area.
Aside from a personal desire to help the needy, I have also completed the honors program for Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Intermediate Japanese at the City College of San Francisco. Also, I am currently taking a major in Mathematics/Economics at the University of California. However, my passion for helping the needy people around the world makes me feel like I am not in the most appropriate area of study. I believe IDS, unlike Mathematics/ Economics, would help me learn more about development programs in various parts of the world and how they were started. With knowledge in finance and international development as well as a business background, I can later start development programs or businesses to help the needy from my society and the world as a whole. I choose UCLA International Institute because it has a reputation in the advancement of IDS.

Besides, it has an able team of professionals, and an amazing student fraternity who I believe will be able to mold me into a great international developer.
