American vs Asian Education Systems
Introduction
The education system can be defined as the procedures, guidelines, and structure used in public schooling. These elements apply to all levels of school starting from kindergarten all the way to high school. Programs are formulated uniquely as compared to that of private schools and are supposed to be followed by all schools (Clegg 1). Reportedly, even though the American education system has similarities with the Asian system, the two have significant differences. This paper seeks to critically examine the various unique aspects of the American educational systems, the key aspects of the Asian educational system, the shared elements of both systems and a summary of the findings.
Topic 1: Unique Aspects of the American Education Systems
Aspect 1
In the American education system, the teacher is a facilitator of all activities which take place. Students are to a great extent empowered to foster their academic work (Yang 5). Students are challenged by the facilitators to engage in debates, discussions and other activities which will help them academically. Both students and teachers are given many privileges and are greatly supported by educational commissions.
Aspect 2
Certainly, the American system focuses on improving the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of students (Clegg 3). The system is designed in a way that they enhance student’s brain strength. This is evident by the fact that the system aims at performing well in some subjects such as Law, medicine, and Engineering while others such as Arts are overseen.

Notably, the system intends to ensure that the students are ‘book smart’ and not ‘street smart.’
Aspect 3
The American system incorporates a lot of technology in education. Most school practices are conducted technologically. Technology is maintained high to foster easy learning and learning in an environment which is favorable (Rector 3). As such, there is constant change in the policies academic procedures in the American system since the fast advancement of technology prompts for constant changes in the education system.
Topic 2: Unique Aspects of the Asian Education Systems
Aspect 1
In the Asian education system, the teacher is fully respected and fully relied upon by students. Students dedicate themselves to all activities. Homes and therefore parents are highly involved in student’s academic lives. Students and teachers have limited privileges. Notably, all privileges that they have are limited to educational activities. Teachers make exclusive decisions about lesson plans and other class programs.
Aspect 2
The Asian education system aims at improving students Emotional Quotient (EQ) along alongside Intelligence Quotient (IQ). According to the system, the combination of IQ and EQ improves the level of human intelligence substantially (Clegg 4). Through projects, the syllabus, the activities included in the curriculum and the topics covered, emotional intelligence helps guide and enhance thinking. This is evident by the fact that the system put more emphasis on courses which relate to innovation such as IT, Engineering and others.
Aspect 3
In Asia, the education system still consists of traditional methods and practices. Most operations are still conducted using the traditional ways. For instance, examinations and others tests are used to determine the progression of students to the next level of learning. Teaching is based on the old methods which involve class teaching, and tests. Discussions and other activities such as projects are not used as in the American schools.
Topic 3: The Shared Elements of Both Systems
Aspect 1
In both the American system and the Asian system, education is future-oriented. This is to mean that education is intended to help students have a brighter future wherein they will secure high paying professional employment opportunities (Rector 2). Regardless of the ways that the two systems follow to ensure academic success, they share a common goal. Inarguably, both systems consider the highly competitive professional positions when administering education and making educational policies.
Aspect 2
In both, if uninterrupted, schooling takes twelve consecutive years. This is because most children are taken to school; preschool at around the age of 5. On the same note, education is compulsory until the age of 16 to 18 (Yang 1). Kindergarten is considered the first level of compulsory education. From kindergarten, education can follow elementary level, middle stage, high school level or divide into elementary, junior and finally senior high.
Aspect 3
In America as well as Asia, the education system is funded by government and other nongovernmental organizations. Schools are supplied with the required resources which promote quality academic performance (Rector 3). Notably, the government sets aside a large portion of the tax to be used to acquire academic resources and implement projects which are relevant to education. Even though the government takes care of a large portion of activities, students are required to pay a subsidized amount of monetary resource for them to acquire education.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it evident that both the American education system and the Asian education system agree on some factors which include: the structure of the educational system, funding, and the goal of education. On the other hand, the Asian system has remained conservative to most of the traditional approaches to education, accords full teaching responsibility to the teacher and uses both EQ and IQ to foster education. Conversely, the American system keeps up with the ever-changing technological innovations, teachers and students share the responsibility of academic endeavors and focus on IQ to attain educational goals. As such, both systems have strengths which are implemented in a way that they ensure quality results.
