While the critical part of reading is the memorization of ideas, the monotony associated with reading and rereading huge junks of information cannot be underestimated. Hence, to me, generative note-taking is better than nongenerative one since it is less stressful, leads to lower boredom and exhaustion. Also, generative note-taking appeared is less time-consuming because paraphrasing minimizes the number of words used to record each idea without narrowing down textual meanings and implications (Flippo & Caverly, 1999). Locating each idea when revising the information is more comfortable due to paraphrasing.
Since it is superior in facilitating internalization of ideas, generative note-taking is more applicable in writing essays, preparing for tests ad leading class discussions. In essay writing, the generative approach enhances connecting ideas of different authors regarding the essay topic. People using the method to write the essay can link ideas in an orderly manner leading to a smoother flow of the composition. On the other hand, leading class discussions requires comprehension and retention of the concepts and ideas of the topic. That way, a discussion leader can establish and correct ambiguities and conflicting ideas that emerge (Ellis & In Nelson, 2013). When preparing for a test, more topics can be revised within a short duration since there is less to look back after generative note-taking since the words used to record a concept are fewer.

The only place that non-generative not taking is applicable is transcribing.
Having established its role in critical reading, I will begin using generative note-taking in the future. Using it will ease the process of grasping concepts, and revising for examinations. I believe that it is with the approach of reading, my study outcomes will improve considerably. I have been using both generative and nongenerative note-taking partially in the past since I am used to jotting down the main points but failed to consider paraphrasing them.
