Summary of Classroom Observation
The lesson begins by introducing learners to the three objectives of the lessons. The introduction aims to create an understanding of the main idea for the 4th grade ELA class. The learners are given the opportunity to develop close reading activity using presented papers. While the central purpose of close reading is to highlight information they think will help them find the main idea, the teaching is interested in the different aspect of reading and main idea.
First, the teacher attempts to assess the interests of the learners as a way of invoking brain-based learning — secondly, the teacher times the reading period to create personalized and contextualized learning but, with the aim of understanding their speed and accuracy in determining the words that suggest the main idea. The teacher takes the role in reading, and the objective of doing this is to develop further interest, make the learners create more in-depth understanding and retention of the main words intended from the passage.
The second step of the lesson activity focuses on the identification of the activities where the learners are given the opportunity to identify the main idea, connect to the reading before the teacher provides feedback to the responses. An important point to note is the motivation attached to the responses given. The lesson at this stage is characterized by guided self-learning. Secondly, the lesson succinctly integrates the aspect of reinforcement to the extent that whenever the learner gives correct “main idea” related to the passage, s/he is reinforced by what looks like “camera sign” and “look good.

Towards the end, the teacher provides several prompts including “who would you show your understanding of water striders do not sink?” In this particular case, the teacher asks Cady to provide an answer (the learner reads the answer from paragraph four sentence two) which the teacher accepts as the right answer. This is an approach where the teacher allows learners to carry the task so that others can learn different ways of solving it (eliciting imitation among learners). This approach continues till the end of the lesson where the teacher motivates with “looking good.”
