Case 2: Mrs. C., Family Needs, Roles, and Responsibilities
The case involves Mrs. C who is old and sick. She cannot get out of bed or do anything and has a loose blander. Mrs. C stays with her husband although she has two married daughters. One of the daughters stays near the parents while the other stays far from the parents.
Question 1. What burdens will this place of her husband?
The burden of Mrs. C’s husband will be physical, psychological and financial support to the wife. The husband will be committed to looking for and administering food to Mrs. C since she cannot feed herself. The husband will also be engaged in keeping the wife clean including her body and clothes. Also, everything that the wife needs from medical expenses to food will be provided by the husband leading to a financial burden. The husband will also have a psychological burden of coping with his loved one (Drench et al., 2012).
Question 2. On her daughter who lives nearby?
The daughter living nearby will have the burden of taking care of her mother. She will need to leave her family to help her father take care of the mother. She will also be affected psychologically because of her connection with mother. The daughter will also have stress on the burden her father has in taking care of the father in addition to the financial burden
Question 3. On her daughter who lives far away?
The daughter who is away will have worries on her mother due to the limited information provided by the father and sister.

She will also have the burden of maintenance cost of her mother.
Question 4. How might this affect the relationship between them?
Mrs. C health care is a responsibility of the whole family which involves the father and the two daughters (Drench et al., 2012). Due to the high maintenance cost, a time will come when the daughters and father will be unable to cater for the bills. Bitterness will develop between the father and the daughters. All will become hostile to each other and communication between them will break. The family will lack cooperation.
Question 5. What services might be needed to enable Mrs. C. to remain in her own home?
Mrs. C will require cleaning services of clothes and emptying female urinal bottle since she cannot walk to the toilet. She will also need a specialized nursing checkup on her condition (Drench et al., 2012). A nurse will be required to visit her regularly. Mrs. C will also require someone to feed her and prepare the meal she can take.
Question 6. What if the daughters want to put Mrs. C. in a skilled nursing facility but the husband wants to keep her at home?  What criteria do you think should be considered when making this decision?
The ability to have a nurse at home frequently should be considered when deciding whether Mrs. C should stay at home. Availability of funds to cater for bills at the nursing facility should also be considered.
Question 7. Imagine that this is your grandparent. How would it affect your family?
Members of the family will be full of frustration and anger because of the grandparent condition (Drench et al., 2012). Some will be depressed reducing productivity. There will also be arguments and disagreements on who should take which responsibility on the grandparent.
 Question 8. How would your family respond?
Regular communications would help respond to the issues within the family. Regular communication keeps the mind engaged not to think about the ailing grandparent. A good plan on how to share the responsibilities involved would be made.
