James Carey’s Model of Transmission and Ritual
Introduction
The ritual view of communication was proposed by James Carey to enable people to understand the theory of communication better. According to James Carey, communication represents a symbol of the reality that people can use to past information in the society. Communication can be considered to be either truthful or false depending on the information put across by people. James Carey indicated that communication could share specific beliefs that people can share while passing vital information in the society. The participation of the people is a significant factor in the ritual of communication. The article examines the ritual view of communication as explained by James Carey.
Lack of involvement can break down the communication process. James Carey attempted to define communication by the ritual ideologies that that enacts community changes. In this regard, it means that particular information that is communicated in the society can warrant specified transformation (Packer 46). James Carey further explained that the commonness and communion witnessed in the society coincide with the communication ideologies that he attempts to put across to the readers. He used the word “ritual” in his explanation of communication due to the relationship that it holds with religion. Religion helps the audience to explore the beliefs that communication shares with the outright view. The concept that is involved in this degree enables the audience to explore the relationship that communication has with religion.

In the transmission of the ritual view, the information presented by an individual includes the basic goal. James Carey explains the basic goals of communication as sending, transmitting and face-to-face delivery. The transmission goal of communication involves the geographical nature of passing information. It mainly depends on the geographical area that the information is being passed. He further explains that using specified means of conveying information such as newspaper is another way of driving a particular view of the world to people’s minds. An example of transmission from a personal experience occurs in the inheritance of my parent’s language of English. It is a cultural transmission that I inherited from my parents since birth.
The mass media means of communication does not pas new information to the one that already exists. It can be analyzed as the ritual act that consists of a shared belief in the society. James Carey emphasizes on the numerous interactions that human beings have with newspapers as another factor that explains the ritual view (Mårtensson 79). He further goes on to explain that the readers of newspapers normally play a significant role in analyzing some dramas in the same articles. It is role that the readers play while also attempting to ascertain the obvious fact that results in their understanding of the article. When a person reads a newspaper, the news written dos not consists of many changes to the previous newspaper. In this aspect, the ritual view of the information in the newspaper basically focuses on the reality that the article presents to the reader. The sharing of this information and the manner in which the readers react and share it with their peers also brings out an understanding of the ritual view. The reading of newspapers defines the relationship between the information presented and the readers.
Conclusion
James Carey used social theory to discuss his understanding of communication in various circumstances. The newspaper is a manner that has been used by many people and organizations to convey relevant information to the masses. James Carey explains that the conveyance of information to the masses does not necessarily curtail the passage of new information to people but also portrays a relevant theory of task.
