The Blind Side is a semi-biographical film that features a sports personality who was an American. The film was produced in the year 2009 under the guidance and production of John Lee Hancock. The film is based and depicts the story of the footballer as contained in the book titled the Blind Side whose publication was done in the year 2006 (Lewis 1). The film has been well received by movie lovers, especially sports personalities. The film’s high preference is attributable to its quality production, content superiority and educative nature. Many sports personalities and aspiring sportsmen including other people resonate with its content as it depicts a successful journey of Michael Oher in the sports industry from a humble beginning. This is evident based on its storyline that features Michael Oher, who played successfully to the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans in the NFL.
The film shows his journey to becoming a star footballer from his early years at Wingate Christian School to Briarcrest School that is located in Memphis Tennessee. It also shows his story of adoption, how he joined the coveted college football team and his final journey to becoming among the first 11 team. His relationship with coaches such as Lou Holtz, Phillip Fulmer and others is also depicted in the film including other players (Edgington 69). As indicated, both the novel and the film narrate an insightful story of Michael Oher, who was a successful footballer in the US league. The man who rose from strength to strength to becoming a cherished footballer came from a humble background (Lewis 1). His steadfastness and determination have what led him to the height of success that he attained in his career. Both the film and the book provide the chronology of events from his childhood including his football career. They cover all his success, schools he attended, his teammates and coaches. The information revealed through the pieces of work has contributed in inspiring many young individuals who aspire good performance in diverse fields of operations. They get to realize that everything is possible with determination and hard work.
The first comparative aspect between the film and the novel is that the novel facilitates the in-depth understanding of the events that characterized the footballer’s life (Cheu 97). It offers a platform where people can easily refer and compare notes. However, the film denies some people the opportunity to understand really the footballer’s life as it requires some interpretations especially on the symbolisms used. To this end, it is clear that the film gives a clear picture of the footballer’s journey of success compared to the novel.
The ending part of the film and the novel also depicts interesting comparative differences. Towards the end of the film, the director shows Michael as he is going to college and he says goodbye to Ann Touhy. The ending was an interesting one characterized with quality flashbacks of the most hilarious including great moments as they unfold. This gives viewers with immense curiosity and the interest of wanting to watch the film again as compared to the novel that ends while talking about Michael’s after college life and his pro status.
Another comparative element is that the novel presented detailed information about the football player, his colleagues and coaches while some information was cut out in the film (Edgington 69). Many football facts are cut out in the film and are not presented as they are in the novel. Similarly, many chapters in the novel were committed to cover the historical facts of football and players, unlike the movie where some information are not captured. Equally, the movie shows faster as compared to the novel that can be read slowly thereby enable the in-depth understanding of the main issues.
Additionally, comparative aspect is evident in the use of symbolism between the novel and the film. The story in the film is told in support of numerous symbolisms as compared to the article. Symbolism is depicted in the film from the preamble stages with the first symbolists being depicted at the time when Anne pulled over to mike signifying that they are in a forest like an area (Edgington 69). The pull over shows that Michael lacks where to go and that the forest is the only place he can go. The objects and sceneries were also used effectively to depict that Michael was truly lost and that his life was characterized by poverty.
It is imperative to conclude that both the novel and the film present credible information about the footballer. They detail his success and journey towards becoming a star in exclusive ways that helps in inspiring hope to both readers and film viewers. They have both been instrumental in shaping opinion and decisions on diverse issues that affect individuals especially the young generation career wise. The differences in context, use of symbolism and the flow of the story in the two pieces of works is not a major issue given that the two methods of communication cannot adopt similar styles of production.
