Consequences of terrorism in Arequipa Society

This research aims to analyze and, above all, evaluate the impact of terrorism on the natural population of Arequip?

Thus, to answer this question, the following sources will be used, thus demonstrating that the population of Arequipa suffered that terrorist violence, since many people take into account the myth that the Arequipa region was not affected by this internal conflict. One of the sources that will be used is as follows: Cases of the Arequipa Department reported to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in such a way the journalistic article about terrorist violence in Arequipa will also be used. There will also be a resource of secondary sources that will support and enrich the investigation.

Source I: Cases of the Arequipa Department reported to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR), Founders: Valentín Paniagua Corazao and Alejandro Toledo, July 13, 2001. This first source are all the cases that were reported to this Peruvian Commission especially those cases that occurred in Arequipa. The CVR was a Peruvian commission mainly in charge of preparing a report on terrorism lived in Peru during the period between 1980 and 2000. It was created in June 2001 by President Valentín Paniagua, together with other civil members, taking into account the terrorist violence of the Shining Path and the Tupac Amaru revolutionary movement. The source is very important, because it is primary since the cases presented are true testifications suffered by the population, and therefore is a source that has a very significant value since they can help a deeper investigation of the events that occurred.

Wait! Consequences Of Terrorism In Arequipa Society paper is just an example!

But still this source has a minority of limitations such as the possibilities that testimonies information may have been, in some way, misrepresented or not exact.

Source II: "It was a myth that terrorist violence did not affect Arequipa" journalistic article published in the newspaper "La República", written by Ruth Condori and published on September 12, 2017. This second source consists of a journalistic article whose purpose is to publicize the consequences of the terrorist teaching that the Arequipa region suffered. This source is secondary, since the brief was not written at that time, but still has a significant value therefore provides a lot of information. However, some limitations were found since the data can be influenced by factors such as the interpretation of the journalist and can also present reliability and validity problems.

Developing

In general terms, the internal armed conflict in Peru began on May 17, 1980 in Ayacucho, among which were the revolutionary movements, the luminous path headed by Abimael Guzmán Reynoso Natural de Arequipa, and the revolutionary movement Túpac Amaru (MRTA) headedBy Victor Polay Campos.

"The internal armed conflict lived by Peru between 1980 and 2000 has been the longest, the most extensive impact on the national territory and that of the highest human and economic costs of our entire republican history". (Chapter 1 of the final report of the CRV), such is the case that an approximate amount of 69,280 people who died in this conflict can be estimated, “the relative proportions of the victims according to the main actors of the conflict would be: 46% caused bythe Luminous PCP-Lser, 30% caused by State agents;and 24% caused by other agents such as MRTA ”(Annex 2 of the Final Report of the CVR), a figure that even exceeds the human losses that were in the War of Independence and War with Chile.

The total reports to the CVR of Peruvians who died or disappeared were a total of 23,969;This amount is nationally. However, in the Arequipa region there were also cases of terrorism, both in the same city and in the different provinces.

  • “Case: 1010541, with the Luminous PCP-Library, presenting the following testimony: 5205993, on April 3, 1992, at 8:30 p.m., In the district of Chuquibamba, province of Arequipa a column of the PCP-SL took as prisoners the residents of the place, whom they formed in ranks in the main square. At the same time, the hikers burned the municipality and other public institutions; They also murdered the people who faced them and those who tried to flee. Augusto Vargas was injured with a shot in the leg when he tried to flee the municipal premises ”.
  • “Case 1009238, responsible PCP-Luminous Sandero, Testimonies: 203383, in November 1988, in the District of Cotahuasi, La Unión province, 80 members of the PCP-SL entered the Treasury of Lancaroya and summoned a meeting to a meeting. Then they recruited 10 settlers, among which were Juan Javier Montoya Azpilcueta and Grimaldo Azpilcueta, who were taken to Cotahuasi. Around five in the morning the recruited returned after having participated in a confrontation. Grimaldo Azpilcueta was found dead, slaughtered ”.
  • “Case 1010752, Responsible: PCP-Liminous Sandero, Testimonies: 520590, on the night of November 21, 1988, in the community of Acorca, Pampamarca district, La Unión La Unión La Unión approximately 40 members of the PCP-SL murdered Justiniano Ponce de León(74) And Grimaldo Ascueta. Justiniano Ponce died of a shot at chest height ".
  • “Case 1010545, Responsible: PCP-Liminous Side.
  • “Case 1010546, Responsible: PCP-Liminous Side. The hikers murdered an unidentified policeman, in the immediate vicinity of the Bank of the Nation. During this incursion, Consuelo Alarcón was missing ”. (Loc.Cit)

It is therefore that terrorist acts were really presented to the CVR in the Arequipa region, these cases are of equal magnitude to that of other regions, since terrorism (Shining Path) was also established in the Arequipa region, having many victims with themand consequences on the population.

It was always thought that Abimael Guzmán, being born in Arequipa, would never attack his own hometown, but nevertheless it was a false statement, because [in the heart of the city, on January 27, 1990. In the offices of the Ministry of Housing, located on the fifth floor of the Popular Bank of Santo Domingo Street, an attack destroyed its main door. Two dynamite firecrackers, placed at the entrance, was also involved affecting neighboring environments.

“One of the provinces suffered by terrorist cruelty was Caravelí. On January 8, 1990, they had no mercy and annihilated the mayor of Caravelí, Abel Nieves Ramos, the former Snoves Neyra, the Lieutenant Governor Eloy Caballero, in addition to Engineers of Mines of Aurifers. Then they riddled Mayor Raúl Cárcamo. They also tried to install more fear dynamiting the bridge of the Chanizo Annex. So that they know who the authors were drawn the symbol of the hoz and the hammer in the bases of the bridge." (The Republic). “In the town center of Tocota, district of Huanuhuanu, province of Caravelí, members of the PCP-SL captured five settlers, who were taken to the town school where the entire population was gathered. There were alive to Abimael Guzmán. Then they took the five captured and banned the population to follow it. After looking for the bodies of the victims, they were found dead. They had signs of being beaten and hanged with cables. They also presented cuts on the neck, all this by the PCP – Shining Path ”. (Case: 1009602 CVR)

So much was the insecurity in the streets, that people decidedLeave your homes and go to a safer place. Such is the case that in the areas that make up the Sierra Arequipeña, the impact of terrorism was greater, the inhabitants of Cotahuasi (La Unión), Castilla, Condensuyos and Pampamarca were places that were very affected since they suffered looting and hiking incursions to hikeDifference of the coast part of the region.

Captain Rogelio Valdez Ortega and the noncommissioned officer Thomas Chayña Calatayu, it was characters who faced the Luminous Path Movement, for this act, the National Police of Peru awarded them for the day of the defenders of democracy, since both were injured to defendHis people and not allow their countrymen to become damaged.

“Terrorism was largely lived to the point where“ the hiking speech reached the university environment. The Cesario Benavente historian lived near these times, and remembers that between 1985 and 1986 these terrorist acts affected the National University of San Agustín since through some students the hiking speech spread, it was here where students and teachers defeated it with ideas with ideasand reforms ”(La República, September 11, 2017) For this reason, the influence that terrorism had on Arequipa society, negatively affected them, because the cases of deaths were many and if we count those cases that were notreported to the CVR then we are talking about very large figures.

conclusion

In conclusion, the Arequipa region was largely affected by terrorism between 1800 and 2000, as it was a hard stage for Arequipa, but they still managed to cope with it;Perhaps in some regions this internal armed conflict has had greater consequences but we cannot leave Arequipa behind, because the above was also a region that was very socially affected, there were deaths, disasters and somehow fear was generated, that memory will still remain in those Arequipa residents.

Reflection

The present research work was very useful since it helped me greatly to know the impact that terrorism had in the Arequipa region, it also helped me to identify reliable and relevant sources that helped me to carry out my present work, becauseSome sources had very noticeable limitations, so they were not trustworthy, but I still learned to value those sources that have fundamental information.

At the end of the investigation I could realize the events that passed at that very remote time in my region, in this way I obtained more information about it and I could understand it more thoroughly.
