Transnational Crimes

Transnational crimes refer to crimes that have the potential of causing harm across a country’s borders. In my paper, I will discuss how some transnational crimes cause damage to society. Palmiotto & Unnithan (2010) argues that countries are under pressure to deal with transnational crime by many international treaties.
Terrorism.
This refers to the use of violence against the public to fulfill political or religious pursuits by an organization. Terrorism causes harm through the death of civilians as well as the destruction of property. Terrorism as a transnational crime may be whereby a country’s feud with another country may trigger terror attacks. For example, the 9/11 attack to the United States was due to religious differences with the Al Qaeda group as well as their Israel support (Beare, 2003).
Money Laundering.
This refers to disguising the source of ill-gotten wealth by various means. Money laundering can cause harm to the society regarding it allowing criminals to expand their operations. It also weakens the economy of the country since a lot of resources are used in law enforcement attempts. As a transnational crime, criminals are fond of hiding money in foreign accounts which are not easily traceable.
Sea Piracy
This refers to taking a ship away from the control of those legally entitled to it. Onuoha (2009) claims that the Sea serves as a means of transport and tourist attraction. This hijacking and robbing affect the society by causing fear of using water transport among citizens, discourages transportation of cargo and thus affecting tourism.

Corruption and Bribery
This refers to giving out illegal payments to persons in official positions as a means of influencing their decisions. As a transnational crime, illicit activities such as importation of contraband products are made possible since the customs officials can be bribed to allow free passage during inspections.
Illegal drug trafficking
This refers to cultivation, manufacture distribution and sale of illicit drugs. Drugs are commonly smuggled from producer country by different drug trafficking cartels to the consumer country. Drug abuse causes health problems to the abusers and poverty because a lot of funds are driven to the purchase of drugs.
