Homeland security plays a key role in protecting the United States homeland from acts of terrorism by managing critical entry points such as the customs department and border security. The formation of the Department of Homeland Security involved a combination of different federal security agencies whose core functions are dedicated to protecting the country and its citizens. This essay seeks to discuss the United States Customs and Border Protection as a federal agency with a homeland security function.
The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a federal agency whose homeland security function is to ensure that the country is safe from the acts of terrorism through real-time surveillance to keep away terrorists and illegal arms (Baggett & Simpkins, 2018). Additionally, the Customs and Border Protection agency plays a key role in enhancing trade security through enforcement of policies regarding immigration and drug laws. The agency for customs and border protection is also responsible for collecting import duties for all goods entering the United States.
The United States Customs and Border Protection agency has been able to achieve considerable success due to their effectiveness in implementing border patrols.

Since the 9-11 attack, this agency has increased the number of patrol agents and built a dynamic workforce to ensure full-time border security in all types of terrain.
