How Sailor Moon and her fellow Sailor Soldiers Would deal with Autistic Partners
The Sailor Moon is a series that features a wide cast of characters. The series is shot in Tokyo, Japan, where a group of magical girls, Sailor Soldiers, combat a group of antagonists trying to conquer the Solar System, the Earth, and the Galaxy (Allison 258). The ten Sailor Soldiers are given the names of the planets, with the exclusion of the Earth. Although most of the soldiers are human with heroic strengths, they have different abilities and characters which make them distinct in their way. The question, therefore, is how the characters would deal with a person suffering from autism if they dated one? To respond this question, this paper analyzes the strength and abilities of each character to understand how they would deal with an autistic partner in a relationship.
Autism, according to the American Psychiatric Association, is classified as a disorder. However, autistic individuals cannot be entirely considered disordered because some of them do not talk at all and can make romantic relationships mainly feasible with their disabilities, but some of them are “high-functioning” and have an apparent desire for romance and dating. There are features of autism that are challenging. These aspects include understanding the other person’s perspectives, reading and understanding social cues, exchanging niceties and managing small talks. In any relationship, these aspects play an important part when interacting with the other partner and also romance.

The major concern, thus, is how the characters in Sailor Moon can deal with partners with these kinds of characteristics in a romantic relationship. The main factor to consider is the features and perceptions of the characters.
First, Sailor Moon, also known as Usagi Tsukino and the main protagonist of the series as well as the leader of the Sailor Soldiers, is a careless and casual young lady with a huge capacity for compassion, love, and understanding. As the series proceeds, she embraces the opportunity to utilize her superpower to offer protection to the people she cares about. With the qualities portrayed by Usagi, she can successfully date a person with autism because of her abilities to understand, care, and show love. Normally, the difference between people with autism and normal people is the different perception of romance and love. For instance, a normal person may think a bar is a good pick for a date, which may turn out to be the worst pick for an autistic person. With the difference in perceptions, it takes an understanding and loving person to handle such an individual. In this regard, Usagi can date and marry an autistic person and deal with them by showing compassion, love and understanding their views and perspectives regarding romance and relationships. Also, with her compassion, love and understanding, when they have autistic children, they will be able to care and love them. Thus, Moon can have a perfect marriage with an autistic partner.
Second, Sailor Mercury, also known as Ami Mizuno, is known to be very intelligent. Her IQ is rumored to be somewhere around 300. Her main qualities are care for people around and her passion for knowledge. In fact, her hope is to one day become a doctor and help people with different disabilities. With these qualities, Ami can successfully date and marry an autistic person. Just as Usagi, she will be able to understand that people have different abilities or disabilities in life and work towards caring and helping her autistic partner. To deal with them, she would care and offer psychological help since she is intelligent and caring. Further, having children with autism will not be a problem with her supposed knowledge and understanding of the different abilities of people. Therefore, she would understand their partner, when to initiate romance and when to talk to them, thus leading to a successful relationship and marriage.
Third, Sailor Mars, also known as Rei Hino, is rather different from the above two characters. She is portrayed as short-tempered and often gets agitated by Usagi’s laziness. Her qualities are different from the other characters because of the way she is uninterested in romance and is more self-controlled. With these qualities, it can be hard to date or marry a person with autism because of the way they think. Most of them consider romance as things that are logical and makes sense. The aspect requires the understanding of the other person’s view and evaluating whether they are logical. Since Rei is uninterested in romance, it will be hard to have an understanding of an autistic person because they will be unresponsive in that area. Therefore, Rei cannot date an autistic person. Her uninterested nature may lead to a dormant and unloving marriage where autistic children will not feel the parental love and support they need.
Fourth, Sailor Jupiter, also known as Makoto Kino, is portrayed as an aggressive person who likes confrontations. In fact, she is rumored to have been expelled from her previous school because of fighting. With this quality, dating or marrying an autistic person would be impossible. Most of the autistic people do not speak and may come out as annoying. Considering Kino is high tempered, and like confrontations, this kind of relationship will be hard to deal with as it would lead to violence every time. Her marriage would be violent, and her autistic children will definitely not feel the parental love and care. Thus, dealing with an autistic person and children would be difficult for Kino.
Fifth, Sailor Venus, also known as Minako Aino, is portrayed as a dreamer. The main quality that sets her apart from the other characters is her obsession with beauty and her love for people. Also, she suffers from anemia. Since anemia is also a medical condition, she will be in a position to understand what autism is and why people with the condition need emotional and psychological support. Therefore, she can date and marry an autistic person and will deal with her well by showing love and care in the form of emotional and psychological support. Also, her children will feel loved because of her understanding of medical condition since she has anemia- it would be a perfect family full of love and support for each other.
Sixth, Sailor Pluto, also known as Setsuna Meioh, has a stern and distant personality. She can also be helpful and friendly. Her distant personality makes her antisocial which would make it hard to date or marry an autistic person. Since autism is more of social disorder, where the victim has impaired social and communication skills, Meioh cannot date an autistic person since most relationships are based on communication and social interactions. Further, her children would feel abandoned because of the lack of social and communication from their mother. The marriage would be bad for the children.
Seventh, Sailor Neptune’s personality can be helpful in dealing with an autistic partner. Her relationship with Sailor Uranus is that of love and care, and this can make her have a successful relationship and marriage with an autistic partner. People with autism desire love and care and people who can understand their condition. Therefore, Neptune’s show of care for Uranus is evidence that she can deal with an autistic partner and children by understanding and care for them.
Eighth, Sailor Chibi Moon also has a strong personality. She values relationships and admires the people around her. She develops a deep bond with Moon despite what other characters think of her. Therefore, she can date and marry an autistic person because of her nature to understand people around her. She is mature and strong and can deal or handle an autistic partner. She will do so by being a loving and understanding partner. Her autistic children will also feel loved. With her ability to love and care for a person regardless of what other people say about them makes her a good fit for autistic partner and children.
Ninth, Sailor Saturn’s qualities make her a good fit for autistic individuals. She is a fighter, sweet, but lonely. After her laboratory accident, she fights her troubles and fights to protect her family. In essence, she loves and values family which means she can have a successful marriage and relationship with a person with autism. Also, because she understands the pain of being an incomplete human being, she would love, care and protect her autistic children making her a good parent.
Lastly, Sailor Uranus is mature and more masculine. She is assertive and may come out as controlling. These qualities may make it hard for her to date or marry an autistic person because most of them do not like to be controlled. Also, relating to her autistic children may become challenging which may lead to them feeling abandoned. Therefore, Uranus may find it difficult to sustain such a relationship and marriage.
Conclusively, it takes special qualities to deal with an autistic person. These people have their views on romance. Also, they are socially impaired and find it hard to communicate effectively. People who are caring, loving and understanding will successfully have a romantic relationship with autistic individuals. Therefore, considering the qualities of each character in the series, Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury would sustain a successful relationship and marriage. Their ability to love, care and understand their partners makes them a perfect fit for a person with autism. On the other hand, Sailor Jupiter would make the worst partner for an autistic person. She is aggressive and assertive, which is the exact opposite of what a person with autism needs.
