Surprising Aspects of Chinese Policing Strategies
Our text, on page 28 tells us that during the early years of the communist party rule in China, regarding the movement of their citizens, the police used some unique policing strategies that were considered to be entirely different from other western nations. The policing plan, as demonstrated in the book, were imposed through the influence of the government (Haberfeld & Others 28). In a broader perspective, some of the conditions and procedures enhanced during this rule significantly affected social interaction as the movement was keenly controlled and overseen by the police, one of the unique aspects of policing in China (Haberfeld & Others 28). This essay aims to explore the aspect mentioned above and other unique functionalities of the Chinese police in the early years of the communist party rule.
One of the most pertinent aspects of policing in China, concerning travel and movement can be vividly explained by exploring the issues surrounding patrols and public surveillance. The text informs us that most western nations have often relied on police patrols, as one of the most effective ways of maintaining law and order in respective societies (Haberfeld & Others 28). However, this seems to be entirely different in China whereby police patrols were uncommon. Instead, the Chinese imposed very stringent restrictions that barred travel. Through this aspect, they could keep an eye over their populations.

Secondly, the law that required registration of the newborns in China, for the sake of controlling movement gets considered surprising. Although such registration occurs in western nations, it is not meant to curtail movement. Besides, it is done by different dedicated government agencies, with the aim of providing relevant information for government budgeting. This law of registration forced many people to stay and live in their areas of birth, some till their death. Special procedures had to be followed if one needed to move to different cities.
The last surprising aspect regarding this topic gets observed through the element of population movement monitoring. Unlike other western countries, the Chinese police monitored individuals’ movement, with the help of neighborhood committees that were well established in the entire nation. Such committees also carried out informal patrols to prevent community crime and burglary. In many western countries, this was considered to be one of the fundamental functionalities of the police (Haberfeld & Others 25).
In conclusion, it is evident that the Chinese police applied some unique and peculiar strategies to maintain law and order in their societies. These strategies significantly curtailed movement and travel, a prominent social aspect. Also, the issue of monitoring individuals can be considered to be a violation of individual privacy obligations.
