Motivation to Undertake a Doctoral Orthodontics Program
To: The Post-Graduate Recruitment Committee at the Western Cape,
I wish to pursue the doctorate program in Orthodontics at the Western Cape University. I am a seasoned orthodontics professional with over five years of working and research experience. I have practiced as a licensed orthodontic at various levels and capacities both as the owner of a private practice clinic in Namibia and also played a managerial and supervisory role at the Western Cape University during my residency. The motivation to undertake a doctoral program comes from a pressing passion, my continued dedication and commitment in the dental field. A key aspiration of undertaking this program is to pioneer in breakthroughs in orthodontics and dental surgery. I believe the Western Cape University presents to me numerous opportunities as a result of my past education at the University and my residency program that majorly involved working with medicine and dentistry students. For instance, I undertook the orthodontics residency program at the Western Cape from June 2004 to September 2009. The doctoral program at Cape will help transform my understanding of orthodontics and positively impact my present and future practice as a licensed and seasoned dental professional.
I undertook a Bachelor’s in General Dentistry from the University of Pretoria and consecutively ranked as one of the top dentistry graduates of the year 2001; a title that was referred to as the Cum Laude Status.

After two years of clinical practice, I proceeded to the University of Witwatersrand in 2003 where I undertook primaries in pathology, physiology, and anatomy. In 2008, I attended the University of Western Cape for the MChD qualification in orthodontic. The area of outlook in my dissertation was The Profile Preferences of Soft-Tissues in both Lay Persons and the Lap Academic Publishing. The three academic qualifications have imparted a radical understanding of various areas in orthodontics which I have used to support my professional practice at an institutional and private practice level. The theoretical foundation obtained from the undergraduate continues to underpin the scope of dental studies and offering the capacity and the confidence required to practice in real-life settings.
Currently, I am practicing as a specialty orthodontist in a private practice entity. I handle the monthly and annual budgeting to cater for medical supplies, specialized equipment, and drugs. My responsibilities further include the coordination of the practice of practitioners and technicians; the receptionist, practice manager, oral hygienist, and the clinical assistant on a daily basis. I have further worked as a community service dentist in East London from 2001 to 2003. The experience obtained in this service was the delivery of primary care to different patient groups. I was further involved in the administration of sepsis and pain control and provided polishing and sealants to patients. The experience obtained from the community service extended to me minor surgical techniques. I used these skills to perform extractions, excision of oral tumors, and an all-around treatment to patients and those, who could not access our dental facilities. I have also provided community education to both the schools and rural clinics in Eastern London during my service.
I believe that a doctorate program in Orthodontics aligns with my professional and practical ambitions. Keeping pace with the ever-changing practical and managerial trends in the healthcare sector is a crucial requirement for a professional dentist. The shifting nature of orthodontics like scanning technologies demands complementary skills from practitioners. Also, demographic and lifestyle changes [eating and dietary habits] are likely to alter tooth decay and fraction raising the need for better understanding of orthodontics and related fields in the healthcare sector (Brothwell & the Society for the Study of Human Biology, 2013). A doctoral program at the Western Cape University will enhance my understanding and positively transform my practice in line with changing needs and upcoming developments in the dental field.
