Expression of explanation and argument
The first passage “How can you slow down your electrical meter twice and save 50% on your electricity bill perfectly legally!” by Ronald Menn, an electrician expresses an explanation rather than an argument. The writer is an expert who has skills in electricity. The message being communicated is out of an observation and seems beneficial to the audience. Thus, anyone who comes across this passage and uses electricity would follow the passage keenly to get it right. He also seems to talk to an audience composed of many people especially those who pay high electricity bills. Thus, this is more of an explanation than an argument. The second passage, “‘There is NO GOD’ Stephen Hawking’s final revelation of the afterlife REVEALED” by Sean Martin is an argument. The message in the passage seems to be proving wrong the normal beliefs that people have about the existence of God. According to physicist Stephen Hawking’s final book, God does not exist and there is nothing like an afterlife (Martin, para3). The fact that these predictions contradict the normal beliefs that there is God makes this passage an argument.
In the explanation passage by Ronald Menn, the writer was talking to another person when he posted an explanandum saying, “I noticed that consumption was only 700 watt. But it should have been 2 or 3 times more (Menn, para4)?” The other person provided an explanans by responding, “…a tool that reduces light consumption (Menn, para4).

” In this case, the “700 watt” was an explanandum that needs to be explained then the explanans provides the relevant explanation. The argument by Sean Martin can be put in standard form as follows:
Premise 1: “No one created the universe and no one directs our fate.”
Premise 2: “I think belief in the afterlife is just wishful thinking.”
Premise 3: “I think that when we die we return to dust.”
Premise 4: “Presumably, they will die out, or become unimportant. Instead, there will be a race of self-designing beings who are improving at an ever-increasing rate.”
Therefore:
Conclusion 1: There is no heaven
Conclusion 2: There is no God (Martin, para6,7,8,9).
From the passage, the author argues that the universe was not created nor is directed by anyone and that no life after death. He strongly believes that whenever people die, they are all headed for dust and are not important. Therefore this leads to conclusion that the writer feels there is no God. Works cited
