Response to the PSA Flyer
One of the major themes in Flannery O’Connor’s “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” is the theme of corruption in religion. This theme is evidenced in the story by the act of Shiftlet when he leaves his wife Lucynell who resembles an angel at the dinner and instead chooses a car (Elie, 2013). The author uses the symbolic resemblance of Lucynell to refer to religion; when Shiftlet abandons her for a car at the dinner; it is symbolic of him abandoning his faith and salvation to pursue material wealth. The PSA topic, “Corrupted Religion” is important for the public’s awareness since it warns the public against the potential of corrupt practices within the various religious organizations. Today, corruption is not limited only to political organizations; there are equally corrupt religious organizations around the world (Lessig, 2013). These corrupt religious organizations defraud believers who naïvely devote all their time and wealth to corrupt religious leaders. The PSA topic and the theme from Flannery O’Connor’s “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” are, therefore, true reflections of the state of affairs in the society regarding religion thus the flyer can effectively warn the public against corrupt religious organizations.
