Chapter 7: Theater Traditions; East and West
1. Which of the 11 theatre periods sounds most interesting?
The medieval theater period sounds most interesting compared to the others. The Roman theater period preceded the medieval era which helped in polishing some of the parts that were not appealing in the time before (Cohen, and Sherman 198). The medieval theater appeared as a renewed interest in theatrical arts and also received exemplifications from renown artists such as William Shakespeare.
2. Why are ritual and storytelling so important to drama?
Theatrical performances involve both religious and life experiences. Dramas presented in theaters comprise of the above practices but in different names which are rituals and storytelling (Cohen, and Sherman 189-190). Rituals are essential in drama as actors and presenters use them to illustrate religious and cultural meanings to the audience. Similarly, storytelling is crucial in drama as it enhances recounting of past occurrences and ensures efficient narrations to the audience.
3. Did you find anything in the chapter that indicated interconnectedness to drama across the world? Describe it.
I found the process of coming up with drama all through to its performance in the theater as something interconnected all over the world. Different creators in different countries use the same method which is coming up with the idea followed by developing the plot and characters then incorporating language and music and lastly presentation in the theatre before an audience.

Wait! Film and Theater Studies paper is just an example!

4. What do you think about Royal theater “only” being for the aristocrats?
In my opinion, Royal theater was worthwhile for the aristocrats as it gave the leaders a time to express their talents. Also, it presented more organized and focused performances unlike in the preceding eras which acted as an example for the following periods (Cohen, and Sherman 204).
5. Music and dancing seem to be important elements in theatre across the globe, why might that be?
Music and dancing go hand in hand in theatrical performances. The two serve different purposes which make them crucial to the theater. Some of their roles include filling the vacuum or developing a response to rhythmic scenes. Also, the two are used to create themes, and present situations as performances are happening making them essential elements in the theater all across the world.
