For-Profit vs. Non-Profit Hospitals Debate

What is your position on the for-profit vs. non-profit debate? Without a doubt, there is a need for profit in every part of the medical profession. The problems in not whether we are favorable or against for-profit organizations. It is more along the lines of the ethical issue underneath. In a strict sense, our research has concluded that non-profit centers offer better care to patients. If that is true, our position is on the non-profit organizations.
Do for-profit hospitals need more regulations? In 2010, the government introduced the Affordable Care Act, this act made necessary that the hospitals clarify the services they provide as a way to know how much the institutions charge for the services offered. Strictly, that law has regulated the behavior of many hospitals, forcing them to control their prices and provide charitable attention for those in need. Besides, given the fact that many for.profit hospitals benefit from federal programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, it is important to control that those benefits don’t go to the pockets of the facility’s stakeholders and are used in what is critical. It is not a matter of attacking private healthcare, instead what the act intends is to clarify where do the money go, which is an entirely normal concern.

Will more regulations prohibit the research that not for profit hospitals can do to improve the population health in the United States? Research should not be exclusive of non-profit hospitals. On the contrary, for-profit facilities should also conduct research that aim for the wellbeing of the patients, instead as a way to attain academic accolades. On the other hand, non-profit institutions such as the St. Jude’s Children Hospital can conduct research relying solely on donations and government funding. It is possible that these regulations hinder medical education, which might take on the student’s formation, creating less-prepared doctors.
Do for-profit hospitals take better/worse care of their patients? Many advocates of non-profit facilities consider that for-profit hospitals are in the health business only with a commercial purpose. In that way, the system is always looking to maximize profits without thinking of the patients. However, for-profit advocates consider that they aim to offer the best care possible with the least cost. There are many hospitals, and different facilities and to assess the motives that drive them all might prove impossible. Nevertheless, many studies have concluded that non-profit institutions have a more dedicated staff. In that light, it is possible to say that non-profit services offer the best attention.
As we can say, the debate concerning which one is better is futile. Strictly, for-profits count with a plethora of resources and non-profit have less. However, the attention the hospitals might bring is more related to the staff. As long as the staff does their job, the patients will be all right.
