Junot Diaz brings out the creepiness and scariness in her book “Drown” and particularly in the short story “No Face.” without necessary including vampires, monsters or even demons to illustrate or bring it out, which is clear evidence of the prowess commanded by the author. The story carries some aspects of absolute ‘realness’ as compared to other works of art like horror and fantasy movies, where all aim to convey or portray a certain message or feeling to its audience. In the short story, “No Face” the yearning for complete freedom and will to do whatever they want and not to be limited by boundaries such as national borders is highlighted. Genuine and admirable masculinity is cultivated through personal struggle and success in conquering the challenges where the individuals are experienced and hardened.
The background and the origin of a person is a major determinant in the shaping of their moral and mental being. The story “Ysrael” in the novel gives the introduction of the character no face which becomes essential information in explaining the person the character has grown to be at the present state (Diaz 3-20). A wild pig chewed his face at a tender age which ruined his face, and this became a source of bullying from his peers. He is even beaten up, and this gives him a reason to wear a mask and embrace his role in the community. This then shapes and strengthens him and makes him a fast sprinter from the various struggles to evade his peer bullies which later became his driving force.

Confidence was built around the firm and cultivated habits like sprinting to stand up and become a man who fought for other people undergoing the same plights no face suffered.
Poverty combined with the lack of a father figure can be a significant setback but through acceptance and propelling towards the positives and not dwelling much on the pains of the past. From the short story, the main character is portrayed to be fatherless and his family poor and unable to achieve a satisfactory life. The absence of a father figure who will always act as a guide in the case of issues arising that needs immediate solutions. With this lack of support, no face takes the mantle and takes the lead in driving the family (Diaz 3-20). The aspect of acting and whining because of the problems that are being experienced is against his principles, whereby acting like a victim is not an option but the rising from bullying and hatred while ignoring the challenges and victimization by remaining ever positive. Therefore, the inadequacy of resources should not be a hindrance to the achievement of objectives but rather motivation and encouragement.
Compassion and love expressed to all unconditionally breed love and sycophancy towards the concerned person. Misfortunes are not destined to follow or happen to a particular select group of individuals, and thus every person has an equal chance of being found or dragged into one. Being ready to help any person despite the origin, background or race is characteristic of the short story. No Face is kind and gentle when it comes to dealing with victims to the villains, despite his personal conditions, he would rather go and beat the bullies and those who want to beat him and show no remorse for the enemies. This powers and energy that he uses are generated from his superhuman strength and the wanton speed which gives him the upper hand and ultimately the superhero experience realized in his selfless actions. This protection and care showed by the main character fuels the people to support and encourage his ways and duty to the society
Diaz in his book tries to address the common issues that are faced by the different families and communities and how to grow past them. No Face was an ideal example the result of taking challenges positively and building on them despite the odds. The plights affecting the people are not selective but random and it can affect anyone and therefore the need to step up and be ready to handle any tribulations and troubles. With a healthy and ready heart and become “invincible” from his statement, “No Face! a few yell out but he has no time for them…He has his power of INVISIBILITY” (Diaz 154-155). He also brings out the perfect illustration of a superhero and how they are supposed to be in nature regarding behaviors and their roles in the society.
In conclusion, the strength and power of a person are molded step by step process to become fully masculine, the hardships and hurdles experienced on the way are responsible for strengthening the person within to be fully prepared. In relating these situations with real life issues and troubles with men is a clear indicator of the masculinity emphasized in the short story. The traits and habits developed through misgivings are the firmest and most practical in application to the real world circumstances.
