A good teacher can make the students understand any topic almost the same way their teacher does. Effective teaching methods must be employed to achieve this understanding. There are several ways of learning new information. They include reading of texts, studying diagrams and flow charts, passively listening to the teacher’s explanation, watching videos, and taking notes, among others. Teaching outcomes can be different depending on the methods used to impart the knowledge. The knowledge passed across is understood only if an effective style of teaching is used.
The most basic methods of teaching are passive, where the student merely receives information. The teacher could dictate notes, or explain concepts, while the students note down the key points. Some of the students, however, could write word for word every statement heard. This is not only cumbersome but also takes the student’s concentration away. This is especially so when the teaching is either purely audio or visual.
Audio and visual methods of teaching, when combined, improve the outcomes of teaching. The two methods complement each other, improving the student’s understanding. Moreover, there are different types of students. Some retain information is better when it is in the audio form, while others decode the visual information better. Combining both forms engages both types of students.
The deficiencies of passive learning are further catered for by active learning.

In the active learning process, the student can ask questions and contribute points, and therefore learns better. This method is most effective when the student has prepared for the class by reading ahead. The student’s participation enables retention of knowledge and corrections on the areas that the student finds difficult to learn. Practical lessons, therefore, come in handy.
Application of the concepts learned is the ultimate measure of successful learning. Regardless of the amount of content, or the amount of time spent teaching, the most important thing is that the student understands that topic of discussion. The student must first be able to decode the information easily, before storing it in memory. How the knowledge is decoded determines how easily the information can be integrated and retrieved in the future. When the student can retrieve this information and even apply it, then learning has taken place.
