The frequency of the use of the Internet for study purposes between young people and children highlights the necessary use of reliability criteria typical of the environment. The issue is a matter of concern in the educational field and has been investigated, mainly, with multiple choice surveys. The originality of this work is to design and apply an instrument that allows an approach to the disagreements between declarative data and data close to the decisions to be made in a context of action. The ICTometer® is an online survey applied to 628 Mexican students, between 14 and 18 years of age. Four of the twenty -six questions of the questionnaire are analyzed. One of them refers to a list of criteria to evaluate the reliability of information (multiple choice);The other three questions demand the selection of reliable websites, based on images taken from the Internet (Screen Shots). It is a situation closer to the real search on the screen that allows to contrast the criteria declared with those effectively used. The statistical analysis of the data shows that the declared criteria do not coincide with those used when selecting reliable websites, in both age groups. However, significant differences between the two age groups appear as regards the criteria stated. Another contribution of this work is to propose a new grouping of the declarative data, using the classical distinction between text and paratext, from literary theory, with the necessary adjustments to treat information texts in the digital space.
