Evolution in informatics is not something that is affecting only nursing; it goes a long way to affect the healthcare system as a whole and thus performance. Because of this, all nurses should possess informatics competencies as it not only affects their daily practice but it is also an effective tool that can impact the quality of nursing care (Sun & Falan, 2013). The informatics skills am now expanding upon will help me in numerous ways given the progress the healthcare sector has made in technology over recent years. Being competent in nursing informatics translates to increased safety for my patients. Informatics will enable me to access lab imaging results, medical histories, as well as medical lists. Additionally, advanced informatics skills will not only help me to make informed decisions on matters related to patient care, but I will also contribute to the development and improvement of technology in the healthcare sector.
TANIC self-assessment changed my perception regarding my current informatics skills. Before the assessment, I could consider myself one of the best when it comes to matters related to clinical information management. TANIC self-assessment proved me wrong, and I realized that my skills in the same are wanting. Other areas I realized I was far much behind than I expected were care evaluation, attendance recording, and discharge planning. These are some of the crucial aspects that determine the level of care patients receive as it impacts other areas including communication which is a critical factor in patient’s safety (Toromanovic et al.

, 2010). This means I could not respond in time to articulate information needs of patients. Nursing and healthcare sector as a whole needs to adopt and encourage a culture that supports acceptance and utilization of information technology. Doing this will not only improve patient safety but it will also raise their satisfaction rates, and this shortens the time of healing.
