Intercultural Education: A field in process of consolidation

Intercultural education in recent years is an issue that has taken relevance among researchers, the author says that the response to articles on the subject was favorable;which reflects the interest in investigating and promoting intercultural education in the Mexican context.

The interest in intercultural education also comes from the importance that has been provided by international organizations, let’s not forget that it is part of the principles that frame quality education. In Mexico, modifications have been given to recognize intercultural education as a constitutional right framed in the Political Constitution in article 4 where the right to non -discrimination ensures.

Another factors that have caused attention to interculturality, is the globalized awakening on the subject. With the use of technologies it is relatively easy to know the diverse cultures that exist in the world. The globalization process causes people to have to migrate to other places to obtain a job, leaving behind their entire culture and making a large range of multiculturalism in different cities, which are reflected in schools.

It is there that the importance of intercultural education in formal education arises, it is necessary that as teachers we are clear about the relevance of our function in the creation of a society that respects, value and reproduces interculturality, since our country is one of thewhich has a greater presence of cultural mixtures in classrooms.

Formal education has the responsibility of breaking the cultural gaps among members of society, eradicating negative attitudes such as racism and discrimination and favoring valuation from children for cultural diversity. If we understood that in the difference lies the richness of our nation, we could make the little ones understand those indigenous languages, which are inherited from our ancestors and that they are in danger of disappearing, they are an important part of what identifies us as a nation andas native peoples.

This article takes up a part that I consider very important for changes in educational policy in our country around intercultural education. Since, in the previous educational reform, the development of pedagogical approaches for the recognition of the diversity and linguistics of our country was provided for the first time. As teachers we present a great challenge, especially those who are working in indigenous communities, since the education that children should receive was based on an intercultural approach, which promotes the appreciation for diversity and rescue cultural elements of the cultural elements of thecommunities and provide education respecting and prioritizing students’ mother tongue. Although this initiative is far from having complete effectiveness, without a doubt the foundations are provided to give progress, although lower on this issue.

Education will always be undoubtedly the tool or means to eliminate the gaps that exist in the members of a community with another, promoting an intercultural education provides the possibility of supporting creation citizens who can develop in an integral way regardless of theirsource. The first step for this is to promote values such as respect, empathy or solidarity and as teachers we have the entrustment of achieving it. The current educational reform also requires us to promote an intercultural education with a humanistic approach. Before us we have a great challenge as educators of the 21st century, we have many factors against, but with teaching disposition and professionalization we can make a change from our classrooms to get this little by little it becomes a reality.
