How Dumb is the Generation under 30?
The popular name for individuals belonging to people the under 30 is the generation of millennials. The extent to which this young generation is dumb is also shown by how heavily they rely on digital technology. The heavy reliance on digital technology has turned a significant segment of the millennials into technology addicts. Many people aged under the 30s have reported to feeling depressed or stressed up when they cannot access their devices such as smartphones, their personal computers, and even gaming consoles. As a result of the increased popularity and the ease at which the digital technology can be accessed, many millennials feel like computers and smartphones are more of a necessity as opposed to being a privilege. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, have also become very popular, thanks to the increased availability of digital technologies and the internet. A huge portion of users of these platforms are young individuals aged below thirty years and below. Most of these young individuals spend a considerable amount of their time on these sites. As such, many young individuals end up wasting their precious time on social media sites instead of putting the same time into other activities that are more rewarding.
The fact that the generation under 30 years has been made dumb by the latest digital technologies is also shown by their preference to engage with their smartphones as opposed to human beings.

The increased popularity of the social media and instant texting technologies has had a considerable impact on the social skills of young individuals below the age of thirty. A huge section of the millennials are socially awkward and find it hard to engage in face-to-face interactions with others. Most of the millennials prefer to socialize over their smartphones as revealed in a recent research which reported that 4 out of 10 millennials said that they interact more with their smartphones compared to the extent to which they interact with their significant others such as friends, parents, and co-workers (Hill n.p). According to Hill, this is an indicator that a high number of millennials interact more with their phones compared to other people. She adds that this does not come as a surprise since up to 77 percent of millennials own smartphones and spend at least 2 hours a day using the same devices.
Another survey conducted by Pew Research also shows that up to half of the millennials agree that they cannot live without their smartphones (Hill n.p). This is a clear indicator of how the young generation has become dumber since never has a smartphone been classified as a basic human need. Every other person only needs Shelter, food, and clothing to survive. Available data also shows that Millennials are more likely to utilize their smartphones as a social escape (Hill n.p). This just means that they prefer to use the smartphones as a tool for avoiding a social interaction. Heavy utilization of digital technologies, primarily by young individuals, has also been shown to alter the structure of the brain (Zachos n.p). Leading scientists report that technology use can impact the parts of the brain that are responsible for controlling an individual’s personality. Too much utilization of technology is said to atrophy the frontal lobe thereby creating a disconnection among the different parts of the brain. Additionally, excess utilization of technology has been shown to shrink the outermost parts of the brain which in turn makes it quite difficult for the affected parties to process information efficiently (Zachos n.p). As such, it is no wonder that the current generation that heavily uses digital technologies is dumber.
The extent to which the generation aged below 30 years is dumb is also shown by the way in which they are less financially-savvy. The young individuals are known to make financial decisions that are not very smart, spending most of their hard-earned incomes on less meaningful things such as entertainment and buying expensive accessories. Despite many of the millennials viewing themselves as being financially-savvy, a recent survey shows otherwise. It is reported that out of all the millennials that were polled, only 8 percent had the right knowledge of how to manage their finances (Dickler n.p). Compared to the previous generations, millennials go out more frequently and spend huge sums of their money on these outings. Additionally, millennials have been shown to have a very high desire of acquiring materials things owned by their peers even when they cannot afford it. Many millennials have massive debts and have little savings, meaning that they are less likely to have access to the same standards of living as their parents and the generations before their parents. The poor financial decisions that millennials make is a clear indicator of how dumb the production aged below thirty years is. Advertisers and marketers seem to have a clear understanding of how silly this generation is given the strategies the marketers of today are using to market favorite brands. Many marketers seek the services of celebrities who the dumb millennials are equally obsessed about. Many millennials are likely to buy a product endorsed by their favorite celebrity without stopping to think how such a purchase will set them back financially.
Despite coming out as being dumber than the previous generations, there are some areas that individuals aged below thirty years have shown to be way smarter than their seniors. They are more tech-savvy, meaning that they are at the forefront as far as coming with new technological inventions is concerned. Additionally, individuals aged below thirty years are more likely to have interacted with people from other cultures and backgrounds, meaning that they are more culturally competent compared to individuals belonging to the older generations. Easy access to information also means that millennials are more knowledgeable about the different academic fields and various aspects of life. But overall, a significant portion the millennials remains less smart compared to the previous generations.
In conclusion, individuals who are thirty years and below have been lauded as being tech-savvy and smarter than those older than thirty. However, a closer examination reveals that they areactually dumber than the previous generations. Popularly known as millennials, people who are below thirty years heavily rely on digital technologies which have turned them into technology junkies. Many people aged under the 30s have reported to feeling depressed or stressed up when they cannot access their devices such as smartphones, their personal computers, and even gaming consoles. As a result of widespread utilization of the social media, a huge section of the millennials are socially awkward and find it hard to engage in face-to-face interactions with others. The extent to which the millennials are dumb is also reflected in their poor financial decisions. Many spend most of their hard-earned incomes on less meaningful things such as entertainment and buying expensive accessories.
