Learning Scenario
The Internet has enabled people to access diverse and new channels of learning. Apart from creating influential, rapid and interactive learning, it has also created a platform for economic development. However, it has justified the need for cultural intelligence within users CITATION RUT16 l 2057 (CLARK, 2016). However, there are e-learning programs that do not support cultural diversity as shown in the following e-learning scenario:
Potential Misunderstanding in E-learning Courses
An online compliance class was participating in class exercise. Students were required to reflect on how the course had been helpful in their lives and how it would impact their career goals. After, they were required to provide prompt questions to help initiate a conversation with their classmates. The students in the class were from different parts of the world. Since answering prompt questions enabled a student’s e-mail address to be visible to other classmates, some students took advantage and initiated conversations that were not related to concepts in compliance. This annoyed some section of classmates, especially female members. Consequently, they raised complaints with the teacher. Some of them threatened to report the matter to the college administration which could put the job of the teacher at risk. Considering the outcome of the compliance class, what could have led female students to raise complaints when some male colleagues initiated non-academic conversations in class? Is there anything that could have been done differently by the teacher to prevent the situation from escalating to that point of students threatening to report to the college administration? As a teacher, how do you make sure students from diverse cultural backgrounds are comfortable in your class?
