Causes and Solutions to Increasing Student Migrants

Introductions
Education is the impartation of knowledge and skills in the learners as a way of leveraging them to have problem-solving skills and the ability to be better society members. Many social values are passed over from generation to generation through the educational systems in place. In some cases, educational systems are informal, but in other cases they are formal. Every country in the modern world has some form of formal education. However, the learners, especially the students in every country do not feel contented with their educational systems. This has increased the number of students who seek to get the academic qualifications beyond the borders. When it comes to education migration, there is no country spared as any first world or third world country forms either a destination or a source of student migrants. In the past decade, the number of the student migrants have grown exponentially, raising a question of what causes the migrating and what needs to be done to stem down the student migration. This paper looks into the changing face of student migrants across different countries and suggests possible causes and solutions to the issue.
The Student Migration Changing Data
It is not only the elite countries including America, England, and the likes that form the net importers of student migrants. Figures show that the need to seek education is an activity that cut beyond all the borders on the globe.

To make matters even more concerning, the number of students seeking education beyond their national borders has risen sharply over the past decade. According to British council’s report dubbed “The Shape of Things to Come: Higher Education Global Trends and Emerging Opportunities To 2020”, the average number of student mobility peaked its highest in 2015 at five million students. The high number represented more than 300% growth from 1990 when the international student statistics showed a total of 1.3 million, with the number hitting 2.1 million at Millennium (Council, 2015)
Further, according to OECD Directorate for Education and Skills report of 2012/2013, Asia topped the regions with student emigrants, contributing a total of 53%. Europe a 25% distantly followed it and even far placed Africa at 8% followed suit (Ellen & Stephen, 2013). Latin America and the Caribbean regions contributed 5% of the student emigrants while North America and Canada contributed 3%. Oceania contributed 1% of the total international students in 2012/ 2013 academic year. All the other countries not classified contributed 5% of all the mobile students. According to the report, almost all the countries across the globe saw a more active student numbers involved in the international education platform.
In the year 2014, Canada recorded an immigrant number of students rising to 336000 which represented 83% increase from the year 2008 to the year 2014. Moreover, 95% and 91% of the international students in Canada recommended the country as a study destination and also as a country with satisfying study experience respectively (Ellen & Stephen, 2013). The academic year 2013/ 2014 saw the US export a net 304 467 students to other countries, but was able to admit 974,926 international students in the academic year 2014/2015. China is the major contributor to the high number of student immigrants into the US, with a total of 304,040 joining various US colleges and universities from China alone. This still represented 11% increase from the previous year, though, for the first time, the growth rate was lower than India’s 29.4% student exports to America bringing India’s total students to 132,888. On the same note, a total of 523,700 Chinese students seeks education from other countries as recorded in the 2014/2015 academic year (Mirrlees, 2011). The figures are appalling if the trends in education are anything worth considering. It would thus be important to examine the cause of the urgent need to increase the number of students seeking for educational needs overseas.
Causes of External Education
Many students seek education abroad to enhance and horn their skills in line with their areas of study (Borrego & Barnhard, 2011). In this regard, students studying for agricultural development would seek education in countries with agricultural prowess like USA and Israel. This shows that some countries are unique is some career fields, and this attracts students to take studies in the countries where proven quality is documented to help in acquiring most appropriate skills for their work. In this regard, students studying oil exploration needs will find their way to the Middle East countries, and those seeking legal studies will find their colleges and preferred universities in Europe. Countries with uniquely identified education system like Finland has been a destination for many students who would like to become teachers.
Education tourism has also been a major contributor to the student movements across the globe (Borrego & Barnhard, 2011). Many students attest to the fact that they wanted just to get out of their home countries for the sake of it, and so get to see new cultures through their educational initiatives. It is a cheaper way to travel abroad using the student visa than using the business class visa that faces more legal restrictions in many other countries.
The need for exposure and interaction with people from different cultural backgrounds have also been the major reason why many students seek education overseas. Students who fall into this category would like to be able to interact and experience different cultural set ups that are not available in their countries of origin. There is a need to make and retain long term friendships with people of different nationalities.
Other students seek international educational needs to improve their career prospects. Countries that value the educational achievements from abroad to be experts always tend to give job opportunities to the graduates who have the academic qualifications from their areas of interest, and from the countries that best offers such education.
Possible Solutions to Student Migrations
The solution to every educational migration depends on the source of the problem or the reason that causes people to move. It would be possible to believe that with the internet age, more people would take to online education and seek qualifications from their respective universities without the need to leave their countries. However, the internet has only fueled the student movements as they have the opportunity to get more knowledge and information before they even set out to seek the qualifications. However, some other universities stood to continue encouraging their distance learning programs that will see a lot of students take to the platform and avoid unnecessary movements. This should be made subsidized in costs to attract more students.
There should also be a cross-platform acceptance of the online degrees and other certifications the industry. The fact that some employers still reject such qualifications prompts more students to seek movement and attend the classes abroad in person. This only works to worsen the student numbers that is involved in the international educations.
The university franchise system seeks to strengthen even further to absorb more students locally. This is where the desired institutions of higher learning are opening up branches and campuses in the various home countries and so encouraging the students from such countries to seek educational needs from their opened up branches.
Lecturer’s exports can also contribute to the solutions of the student migrations problems. Universities should note the countries where most of their international students come from, and then partner with one of the local universities that can provide similar educational materials before they send in lecturers to teach students locally.
Conclusions
The exponential rise in the international student numbers across the globe is a major concern to many educational stakeholders. It is important to know the causal agents of the high student number migrations that may cause educational instability. Some of the causes of the ever increasing student numbers are the inability of some employers to recognize online degrees or the distance educational qualifications. Moreover, other causes include the need to have the qualifications from the countries that offer a given form of educational materials. This calls upon the educational stakeholders to harmonize the education systems and allow the use of the long distance qualifications as part of credentials that a person may use for career purposes. Moreover, universities should also partner with other universities across the borders to offer educational materials that would be similar to moving outside the country. Therefore, if it should be abandoned, the educational stakeholders should focus on the areas that cause the problems before addressing the need to offer solutions to the educational migrations.
