Music Department Design for School
The idea is to come up with an innovative design for a school music department. In this concept design, the intention is to come up with a design that will suit the needs of the music department. It is expected to provide a good learning environment for music students and also for instructors to offer quality tutorials. The minimum requirements for the music department will be provided within the available space. This includes the number of classes, workshop, and practise rooms and offices. In this regard, the design has to make maximum utilization of the available space while at the same time ensuring that all the music department needs are met.
It should be a student-driven model of education that can treat every available space as a performance space. In other words, the design should support the core objective of the department which is to offer quality learning in music (ArchDaily 2018). Fundamentally, the plan will be to incorporate nature with the building, an idea that will be in line with the green design. Green design is a construction design that is environmentally sustainable and is in line with the economic, social and ecological sustainability. The design should also be in such a manner that it maintains acoustic isolation and provides natural light.
Building and Site
The design and color will be aimed at enhancing the level of concentration among the students. Students often concentrate when there is a bright color. A grass roof will be installed to regulate the temperatures within the building while at the time adhering to the requirements of the green environment.

It is to be located in an area that has surrounding trees. There will be trees and flowers along the access pavements. The design will need to meet the camping experience of the students. This will be achieved by incorporating the environmental factors at the site where the construction is to be done. The inside will be painted grey and white. These are colors that can boost the concentration of a musician (ArchDaily 2018). The interior installations will be visible as this will aid in maintaining acoustic insulation. It is worth noting that silent spaces, rhythm, patterns, notes, and chords are some of the significant factors that will inspire the project.
Client and User
Although the building will be in a limited space, it will take into account the number of people to be accommodated. Classrooms and workshops will be adjacent to each other leaving just enough verandah space for people to walk through comfortably. Space will also be such that it allows the movement of music equipment with ease (ArchDaily 2018). In order to maintain silence and reduce interruptions and distractions, the walls and the roof are to be acoustically insulated. No holes will be left on the walls and/or roofs. This will ensure that transmission of sounds between the walls will be greatly reduced or eradicated completely. Each of the classrooms is to be designed based on the volume it is expected to hold.
Formica panels painted with specific colors will be raised outside the glass walls. The panels will be arranged rhythmically along all the walls. There will also be a student center outside the classrooms where students can gather for refreshments and small meetings. The colors of the student center walls will be attractive for youthful students. This is the only common area to be created. Slats ceiling which is placed in a manner resembling piano chords and continuous pentagrams will be installed in the outside roof of the common area.
Music Program
Ceiling patterns will be repeated along all the corridors and inside classrooms and common areas. The Formica walls will also be repeated on all the outside walls. The walls will be such that they absorb sound to reduce echo and to increase the quality of sound.
