One of the pressing economic issues faced by Asia is the new wave of anti-globalization. Signature events include the Brexit, Trump’s economic ethnonationalism, and the most recent is the US-China trade war. Protectionist policies and public’s demand for restoring of jobs redirected the capital investment back to their countries. This has resulted in a decline in direct foreign investment and stunted economic growth. Such countries would need to come to an agreement and adopt policies that would ensure mutual and continued growth for all countries. For the past decade, many Asian countries have benefited from labor-intensive manufacturing. This has allowed them to achieve modernization. However, this trend will not continue as most countries seek significant capital injection and fast progressing automated manufacturing technology.
Infrastructure Development
Demographic character and vast population are advantageous for Asia. On the other hand, the shortage of infrastructure has been a stumbling block for the Asian economy and countries. Info-communication infrastructure and logistic networks are fundamental to the economy. Infrastructure can be termed as an enabler of development and the countries need to focus on their strengths in coming up with development projects that offer additional benefits.
Regional Integration
Asian countries, especially ASEAN countries have been working towards integration and cooperation. Further promotion of trade in goods and development of tariff rates will enhance the economic development.
