New York city is often associated with extraordinary things; the large natural harbors, skyscrapers, congested sidewalks, celebrities desperate to shop in the most famous stores, and the never-ending voices of attractions. As the largest city in the United States and the center of the universe, thousands of enthusiastic people travel to the big city as to make their dreams come true. For most of them, the first days are fantastic especially when they make new friends, they party from sunset to dawn, and travel from Brooklyn to Staten Island. However, things begin to fall apart when they meet the dark side of the city. Poverty is a significant challenge in the city of New York, and it closes the doors of most of the enthusiastic and innocent people. For newcomers, the abject poverty that embezzles the city becomes evident when they realize that they cannot get rid the dead weight in their friend’s apartment., never have money or food for days, and rashes begin to attack their legs, yet they do not have health insurance.
New York City constitutes of five boroughs each with a different social-economic and political environment. Some of the boroughs including Brooklyn are well developed with low poverty levels. However, some of the communities living in boroughs such as Bronx are victims of the poverty that arises from the severe financial crisis, discrimination, limited resources to develop a stable economic foundation, and crime. When the unfavorable economic conditions are coupled with the large and continuously widening gap between the rich and the poor, the poverty levels increase to a state that leaves the common New York resident in severe economic constraints that a newcomer cannot imagine or even persevere.

In fact, almost half of the New Yorkers live in poverty due to low wages, unemployment, the high cost of living which includes high rent charges, and lack of benefits (Inae). However, it is only the low-class citizens who can realize the harsh reality as the middle class, and the upper class can cope with the high living costs. Thus, New York’s beauty is not for everyone, and unfortunately one cannot understand its miseries through tales.
Rationally, everyone who lives in New York is poor as he or she has to face numerous financial strains. Even the residents who would be regarded as middle class or upper-middle class struggle to meet their ends in New York. The rents are astronomical and maneuvering about the city’s bureaucracy is more like being in a dystopian world where to the neophytes and outsiders the pace feels at a neck-breaking speed. Although the city has access to much diversity of everything from the foods, clothes, sports, and picnics, the diversity of everything only favors the few who can afford whatever is offered. The rest who are put off by poverty thus find living in New York downright frustrating and miserable. They only enjoy the beauty of the city at a glance before heading to their routine duties. Sometimes, in a smelly subway car, or a massive underground slum where giant rats frolic in ripped-apart garbage bags and straphangers often bust into violent fury and the only hope that remains is to see the sunset through the cracks in the walls.
Despite being an amazing city with good public transportation, big shopping malls, the largest harbors in the world, forests, and nightlife, New York City has never been happier than San Francisco, Washington, or Los Angeles. With the physical and psychological distress, enduring a summer in New York is probably the last option a New Yorker would consider. Like it or not, living in New York City means conflicting with yourself, the choices you make, your needs, and your will. Furthermore, being confronted by individual cosmic insignificance as you scuffle through an inferno as to get a job is the most unpleasant sensation that a New Yorker experiences. The diseases that often strike the city such as the Legionnaires diseases amplify the baseline miseries that residents in the city face. All these contribute to the unhappiness that New Yorkers experience. In fact, researchers from the University of British Columbia have in several instances declared New York as America’s unhappiest city. In every aspect, the experiences in the city are challenging and invisible, particularly for outsiders. The hustle, hassle, garbage, arrogance, and the noise are often intimidating and forgiving. The experiences in most cases suck the outsiders, and they finally accept reluctantly and leave.
In many aspects, New York is a city full of promises. The big natural harbors, shopping malls, celebrities, skyscrapers, and racial and ethnic diversity makes New York a universe city. However, there is always the other side of the coin. A city stricken by poverty and the low-class society cannot afford food or access health facilities. It is a city that is intimidating and frustrating particularly for enthusiastic outsiders. It is miserable to live in when your income is low as access to everything comes at a price.
