Difference between Nursing Research and EBP
Though closely related, the terms “evidence-based practice” and “nursing research” do not mean the same thing. They are different, and in practice, one term precedes the other term. According to Conner (2018), nursing research always comes before evidence-based practice because researchers use ideas and facts obtained from these research to lay out the framework of the EBP.
This inkling leads us to the second difference between nursing research and EBP which is the definition. Nursing research can be described as the act and process of validating an existing knowledge or generating new nursing knowledge about a phenomenon. EBP, on the other hand, can be defined as the careful integration of current best evidence in making judgments about patients and in caring for them (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2013). EBP focuses on research findings, continuous quality improvement plus other forms of investigative data and professional opinions to identify the best improvement procedures.
EBP and nursing research also differ in purpose. The evidence-based practice looks into the ‘why’ behind existing processes and techniques of improvement. Nursing research, on the other hands, provides healthcare professionals with impartial, quantitative and qualitative information on research subjects.
Nursing research and EBP also contrast in their requirements. The evidence-based practice requires health facilities to ensure that nurses evaluate and apply published research in every aspect of their operational and clinical processes (Grove, Burns, & Gray, 2014).

Nursing research, on the other hand, requires nurses to carry out research tasks and share findings of those studies other nurses.
Thus, in a nutshell, the evidence-based practice involves the integration of the best available evidence, patient values, and clinical expertise to improve patient care outcomes. A nurse guided by EBP asks relevant clinical questions, finds the preeminent evidence to answer those questions, and uses clinical outcomes to evaluate evidence. Nursing research, on the other hand, involves the generation of new knowledge, which can be used to answer specific research problems.
