Payments for athletes
The issue of compensation of athletes for their craft has often triggered a debate on the matter of adequacy and proportionality to their input. In light of developments in the professional sporting industry, it is becoming increasingly evident and acceptable that athletes are deserving of their wages, either where insignificantly low or absurdly high.
Numerous commentators conceded that indeed, athletes are worthy of very high wages for various reasons. Ideally and from a moral perspective, sports as a commercial entity has witnessed tumultuous growth over the past few decades. This has culminated in unprecedented profits for a vast majority of stakeholders in the sporting industry. Some have argued that, to deny the athletes an equitable share of this returns would be to act against the moral order (Kim et al. 304). In this way, the athletes are deserving of the excessive charges some of them take home in wages.
Further, some have argued that indeed athletes deserve the pay they earn, as a reward for the immense physical effort they invest in athletics. Many times, athletes are reported to dedicate a significant portion of their lives for the advancement of sporting agendas. This often implies hard work and dedication to attain greater payments (Burnett et al. 8). The wages earned by athletes are merely a reward for the effort and as such is deserved.
Also, athletes deserve of their wages since, in the present day, the sporting ventures have morphed into careers, upon which the athletes and their dependents are optimistic for their subsistence (Friede 519).

To deny the athletes’ equal payments for their endeavor would have the trickledown effect of reaching individuals who did not participate directly but whose welfare was dependent on the athletes.
However, not all opinions on the topic come to an agreement. Some hardline critics insist that athletes do not deserve very high salaries as it is not commensurate for their input and considerable effort. To this end, parallels are drawn from numerous other intellectually involving occupations such as teaching, which never gets similar monetary rewards (Pollick 21).
In conclusion, the issues of whether or not athletes fall short of the qualifying threshold for high salaries will be debated for much longer time. However, it is a worthy concession that athletes put in a lot of effort and energy into their sporting engagements and are deserving of compensation. The magnitude of such payment should be determined about existing principles of equity and financial reasonability.
