1- In response to your question, in my institution, the use of a phone is prohibited. As per the institution’s policy, staffs are not allowed to use their phones in the unit to uphold patient’s privacy. Also, visitors cannot enter the unit with their phones; they should keep their phones in their bags or keep them downstairs in the lobby where there are lockers for visitors. The visitors are meant to use these lockers to keep their stuff before entering the unit. As you are aware from the previous post I work in a psychiatric hospital, that’s why patient’s privacy is crucial. The patients’ families are so much involved in ensuring that there is no breach of patients’ privacy, but even though we try our best to prevent complications, there is always something they find to discredit us. It is very stressful to deal with such situations when we know we are trying our best to act professionally, but other people think otherwise. Nonetheless, as professionals, we should protect our patients’ privacy no matter what. Also, our privacy should be protected.
2- Nowadays, it is a challenge for healthcare professionals to maintain patient’s confidentiality. Nurses are obliged to follow the nurses’ code of ethics and respect the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPPA) law. As you had mentioned, breach of confidentiality prevents the attainment of patient’s safety, yet patients are vulnerable because of their disease processes. It is the duty of every nurse to protect them.

Technology is beneficial, but we have to be mindful of our obligation to ensure patient’s confidentiality prevails. Patient’s therapeutic boundaries are crucial for a healthy interaction between the patient and the nurse. When nurses set porous boundaries, they are not able to establish a relationship characterized by mutual respect between them and their patients.
