Qualitative and Quantitative Research
Nursing knowledge is a body of knowledge that develops a critical understanding through evaluation the techniques. These techniques are focused on developing and applying the most effective, evidence-based medical intervention techniques. The knowledge is derived from the nurses’ everyday practice and personal experience as well as the knowledge drawn from research and evaluation. Due to its progressive nature, healthcare practitioners are faced with a challenge to question the existing techniques with the aim of developing the most effective alternative options.
In developing the nursing knowledge, qualitative, quantitative and outcome research methods help to gather the necessary data for critical analysis successfully. Qualitative research is an explorative research method that incorporates the constructive and interpretive positions. This type of research is used to uncover changes in personal feelings, perceptions, and opinions about a particular situation. Quantitative research is a more detail-oriented evaluation that emphasizes on quantification of all clinical constraints. Lastly, the outcome research method focuses on the results of the phenomenon being evaluated.
Like other research activities, nursing research studies are well designed to cater to the needs of the involved clinical constraints and data required for analysis using inductive and deductive approaches (Yilmaz, 2013).

These research methods are devised to gather information about patients’ experiences during medication, nurses’ learning and contribution of such learning in achieving more patient-centered care, and the effect of patient care on healthcare outcomes.
For research on obesity, qualitative, quantitative and outcome research methods can be jointly or independently used to establish various aspects of a clinical condition and effective mitigation options. To gather information about the number of obese people visiting a healthcare facility, qualitative and quantitative methods can be used. In the qualitative method, a nurse may gather information about patients’ obesity status through personal observation. At the same time, the nurse may record the patients’ height and weight measurements and use it to calculate the patients’ BMI (Body Mass Index), and use it to establish whether the patient is obese. The outcome research method may be used to gather information on the effect of a ten-minute daily physical exercise program on a patient’s BMI.
