The Village by M. Night Shyamalan
The 2004 film, The Village by M. Night Shyamalan can be viewed as a psychological thriller that captures the attention of the audience from the beginning. It includes a strange twist at the end whereby one discovers that there are two worlds separated by a wall. The individuals inside the wall lead an isolated life; a life free from technology and interaction with the other parts of the world. The village elders influence the rest of the villagers to believe that there exist creatures in the wood and that there is an agreement between them and the creatures not to cross each other’s borders. It is the belief and the made-up monsters that prevent the villagers from entering the woods (Shyamalan).
The emotional part of the film that I connected with is the drive by Ivy to save Lucius’ life after being continuously stabbed by Noah, the village coward. She depicts an ambitious character whereby despite the others being afraid of the “monsters”, she still continues with her mission of getting medicine from the city to save Lucius (Shyamalan). Her drive is relatable especially when one is focused on achieving a particular goal. During her journey, her motivation strengthens her to fight one of the “monsters” and kill it. The monster, in this case, was Noah wearing one of the costumes created by the elders. The second scene that I resonated with is the despair exhibited by Ivy’s sister after Lucius rejected her feelings.

She enthusiastically approaches Lucius and opens up about her love for him. The scene then immediately shifts to the next scene where the sister cries in Ivy’s arms as Ivy tries to comfort her. It is later revealed that Lucius is in love with Ivy and not the sister (Shyamalan). Her reaction is relatable when it comes to rejection after hoping that one’s feelings might be reciprocated. It also does not only apply to relationships but to any disappointing situation whereby one looks forward to achieving a certain goal but fails to accomplish it as expected.
