Q1. The reason I am interested in being a high school mentor
A High school mentor has the advantage of guiding students to be self-motivated, discover their areas of interest and attain high-grade scores by senior year. Most students in the first years of learning need guidance on education matters from someone who has the experience in order to make the right choice. Since 1999 Breakthrough New York has had tremendous reviews of changing lives of many motivated and low-income earning students by helping them select and apply to good colleges. Breakthrough New York has an organized mentorship program that has had positive feedback from a large percentage of students throughout New York and it is highly recommended to most students. Becoming a mentor at Breakthrough New York will increase my career opportunities and the exposure will help increase my mentorship skills and knowledge of my subjects, it will enhance my communication and personal skills through constant interaction with the 8th grade students. Team work is a skill I possess that will help motivate the students to be actively involved throughout the program and this will enable them achieve the required deadlines.
Q2. The challenges faced, action taken and future precautions
I faced a lack of staff support from the organization I was offering the services to. The staff at the institution were too busy to give me a proper introduction and this would have made lose trust from the students.

Fortunately, I was able to create a good rapport and gain trust at the same time. This aspect enabled me to be prepared for any scenario in my aspiration to be a high school mentor. Importantly, the lack of support built a sense of resilience and independence in me. To prevent this in the future, I would propose there be a specific person in all institutions to introduce the mentor and take them through all institution protocols. I possess exceptional communication skills that will enable me to impart knowledge on my mentees.
Q3. The time I led students into results oriented goals and my experience.
Honesty and diplomacy are my key skills because they help the mentee be open to me and make the right choices. Preparedness has also contributed immensely by helping my mentees gain trust with me because of the commitment I show during my sessions. I actively involve the mentee during the whole program by allowing them to choose topics they want to talk about beforehand, and this helps them participate during the program. I have mentored ESL students at Catholic charities archdiocese in New York through a mentorship program in November 2017 – April 2018 as an Intern/English Composition Tutor. The program helped the students with word pronunciation and language understanding assignments, and the challenge. Importantly, my input inspired my audience to be hardworking and work towards achieving their dreams despite the prevailing challenges that they were facing. This prior experience and the challenges that I faced will enable me to work efficiently as a high school mentor. My past experience in this concept will enable me to anticipate the challenges as I work to bridge them during my role as a mentor.
Q4. Career commitments
The students I mentored during this period, all had a successful college selection and they were all satisfied since their goals were achieved. And this experience taught me that the mentor and mentee relationship is important because it creates trust between the two. In this timeframe, I plan on working as per my commitment schedule whereby, I will have lecture classes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and during this period, there will be weekly student assessment on progress, student application feedback and frequent reporting on the progress to a permanent employee of Breakthrough New York. Attached is my weekly schedule on how I plan to attend my lecture lessons and what to teach each day. I have certain occasional commitments based on my academic schedule. I will seek absence from duty on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. I will make up for this lost time through auxiliary lectures that I will schedule during my overtime period in my capacity as a mentor. The rest of the mentorship classes will be organized in the period of 8 to 5 pm on weekdays. Scheduling my work will contribute positively to proper time management and organized lecture lessons, and with my other daily responsibilities, away from Breakthrough New York, I will reschedule them weekly to fit into my tutoring timetable to avoid interfering with the school program. This internship will help me manage time accordingly, making it able to complete tasks within the stipulated time.
