Nutrition is an essential aspect of one’s lifestyle and diet. Pregnant women are advised to take particular kind of foods since they require specific nutrients that are important in maintaining their health and that of the child who will be born. The type of food that the pregnant woman feeds on during the pregnancy period will determine the health of the infant and can help prevent diseases in adulthood (Hytten 1979).
A pregnant woman requires more calories as compared to an average, healthy woman with a moderately active lifestyle. Pregnant women, therefore, need to increase energy intake and macronutrients slightly. Pregnant women need to follow nutrition guidelines to avoid having deficient or excess calories and macronutrients. Excess calories and macronutrients can lead to health complications even to miscarriage (Hytten 1979).
During pregnancy, the quality of fats plays an important role, while the quantity of the fats is not considered. It helps in the fetal development and the growth of the infant. The pregnant woman will, therefore, be required to take fats that are important for the well-being of the unborn baby. This condition is not necessary for a woman who is not pregnant (Hytten 1979).
Micronutrients are significant during pregnancy. A pregnant woman will be required to take more micronutrients than the macronutrients, a condition necessary for the development of the fetus. Micronutrients such as iron, iodine, calcium, folic acid and vitamin D are essential to a pregnant woman.

An ordinary healthy woman may not need any particular nutrition guidelines for a diet with micronutrients (Hytten 1979).
An under-nourished pregnant woman risk dying while pregnant, since they may fail to improve their nutritional status when pregnant due to the demand of the growing baby. She may also give birth to an under-weight child or give birth to a premature child (Hytten 1979).
