The study “Minority nursing students” perception of their baccalaureate program” by Tabi, Thornton, Garno, and Rushing (2013) examined the experiences of nursing students of the minority group undertaking a baccalaureate program in a university in the southeast rural region in Georgia. Forty six students of African-American and Hispanic origins, as well as other minor racial and ethnic groups, got enrolled in SCRUBS Program. This project was comprehensive and diverse with an objective to improve the academic performance of these nursing students.
Even though the program was found to be successful in enhancing the students’ educational experience, they had several challenges related to their diverse cultural backgrounds (Tabi, Thornton, Garno, & Rushing, 2013). It has been reported that socio-cultural differences may lead to challenges such as loneliness and alienation among students that may affect their chances of educational success and this situation is made even worse with financial difficulties (Khawaja, & Stallman, 2011). From Tabi, Thornton, Garno, and Rushing’s (2013) study, it was demonstrated that outcomes of learning or teaching programs involving students of multicultural backgrounds could be improved by addressing both the intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with such programs. Some of the interventions may include mentoring, tutoring and promoting socialization as well as providing the required resources inadequate levels.

These approaches can help create learning environments that are supportive and culturally-inclusive. Thus, they would help the students overcome the socio-cultural challenges associated with their learning programs and achieving the best learning outcomes. In conclusion, the study by Tabi, Thornton, Garno, and Rushing (2013) highlights how socio-cultural factors can influence the impacts of nursing learning programs. It also emphasizes the need for addressing these factors to obtain the intended benefits.
