South Korea experienced an IMF financial crisis in 1997; nevertheless, although I was a little kid at that time, I still remember the economic hardships everyone experienced in my country. The repercussions of the crisis lasted until the early 2000s, and many people lost their jobs and committed suicide. Hence, I grew up knowing the importance of a healthy economy and businesses for a country, which boosted my interest in studying business, which led me to this application.
After graduating high school, I entered in the South Korean Army, where I spent two years. During my stint in the military, I looked aimlessly for a school where I could learn economics and business, but I failed miserably. However, that was until I talked to one of my cousins who told me about how he had graduated from UW-Madison Business School. He spoke wonders about the faculty, the campus, and the classes that opened my eyes and showed me a path I could follow. Likewise, he told me how all the things he learned have been useful through his career, which was another strong point in my decision for applying. Finally, after giving it plenty of thought during my military service, I left my country the day after I finished my two years of duty.
Nevertheless, although my cousin’s recommendation did affect me, my decision was also based on my assessment of the school. I have always considered myself as a pragmatic individual and the fact that UW-Madison’s curriculum emphasizes real issues I might find during my practice sealed the deal.

Wait! Tell us why you decided to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, share with us the academic, extracurricular, or research opportunities you would take advantage of as a student. If applicable, provide details of any circumstance paper is just an example!

Thus, I find much more appealing and enriching studying real economic problems rather than only theories; however, I understand the importance of theory, and I am willing to learn and find their applications in real situations. Therefore, UW-Madison gives me the opportunity to focus my education on learning the implications and causes of contemporary economic issues. Ultimately, my decision on dealing with real issues is simple: I want my knowledge to be applicable in various situations as a way to contribute to the society with my actions
For that reason, during my first year I conducted research on the factors that affect students’ GPAs and although the results were rather inconclusive, I found I had a passion for researching things that could be applied. Maybe with more time and resources, what started as a project might become a study capable of benefitting the community. For that reason, I would not consider myself a complete professional without the abilities to improve the world around me and gain real insights into the world of business by getting involved in real investments and projects that have a chance to be more than letters on a paper and become something useful and applicable that improves the lives of the people around me.
Therefore, If UW-Madison gives me such opportunity, I would be honored of calling the institution my alma mater.
